À propos

CLS is a global company and pioneer provider of monitoring and surveillance solutions for the Earth, created in 1986. We are subsidiary of the French Space Agency (CNES) and CNP, an investment firm. Our mission is to create innovative space-based solutions to understand and protect our planet and to manage its resources sustainably. CLS employs 900 people at our headquarters in Toulouse (France) and in 30 other sites around the world. The company works in five strategic markets: sustainable fisheries management, environmental monitoring, maritime surveillance, mobility, and energy & infrastructures monitoring. CLS processes data from 100,000 transponders per month (such as drifting buoys, animal tags, VMS transponders, & LRIT tracking) and observes the oceans and inland waters (more than 20 instruments onboard satellites daily deliver information to CLS on the world's seas and oceans). In addition, we monitor land and sea activities by satellite (nearly 10,000 radar processed each year). Committed to a sustainable planet, the company works every day for the Earth, from Space.

🦈🐢 #Guardians of the Galapagos: Advanced Satellite Surveillance to Protect Marine Biodiversity 🌎 Sea lions, penguins, Marine Iguanas, Hammerhead Sharks, Green turtles, … Galapagos, renowned for its unparalleled marine #biodiversity, faces significant threats to its delicate ecosystem. 🛰 To safeguard this unique natural heritage, there was a strategic need for advanced satellite surveillance systems to monitor #FishingActivities and tourist operations. 💡 #Innovations are key to protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve from illegal fishing and ensure sustainable tourism practices, thereby preserving this ecological treasure for generations to come. 💚WildAid, an NGO based in San Francisco, has been working in the Galápagos since 2000, supporting the conservation of the Marine Reserve. Due to the vastness of the protected area and the efforts to maintain the patrol fleet of the Galápagos National Park Directorate, the organization has been promoting the use of #satellite monitoring technologies provided by CLS since 2009 to track fishing vessels from the Ecuadorian and international fleets within and around the Galápagos Islands, thus ensuring their #protection. A huge thanks to Diana Vinueza, Project manager from the biodiversity protection organization WildAid who she told us everything about this succes story based on the use of THEMIS, our fisheries monitoring center platform. #IUU #SustainableOcean #FishingMonitoringCenter #Conservation

Papua New Guinea’s National Fisheries Authority Innovative Use of THEMIS SAR    The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has embarked with CLS on a unique and groundbreaking contract involving the deployment of #THEMISSAR (Thematic Maritime Information System #SearchAndRescue).     🚢 Although the NFA is not a Search and Rescue (#SAR) organization in the strictest sense, as such an organization does exist in Papua New Guinea, the Authority is setting a new benchmark in #maritimesafety by taking proactive steps to ensure the security and protection of its fishing vessels, fishing crew and personnel.  👉 The economic significance of fishing in PNG and the awareness of the additional benefits in terms of fishermen's safety gave the impetus for the acquisition of CLS’ THEMIS SAR. 🛰 Beyond traditional SAR operations THEMIS SAR is also capable of displaying near real time Vessel Monitoring System (#VMS) positions for all vessels that are reporting to the NFA.    Thank you to David Karis, to Carolyn IVE, from NFA, to Guan Oon, Director of CLS Oceania, the driving force behind this great project.     Read more: https://lnkd.in/eFwBapHH

💡 In Mongolia, "rangeland" means "homeland," showing how important these lands are. A quarter of Mongolians are herders, and almost half the population relies on livestock for food, income, and wealth. However, Mongolia’s pastoral way of life is under threat due to degrading pastures from overgrazing and climate change.   Our experts Alice Connault and Justine Hugé were recently in Mongolia for the closing ceremony of the FASEP – Mongolia project funded by Direction générale du Trésor (French Treasury), which included presenting the project to the French Embassy, along with partners the General Authority for Land Administration, Geodesy and Cartography and the Governorate of Bayankhongor.   🛰 For this project, carried out over the past 2 years, OREADE-BRECHE, AVSF - Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, and CLS Group have been working on a tool to monitor pasture conditions in Mongolia using remote sensing through an innovative evaluation method.   This study, carried out in a pilot area, aims to: 👉 Provide new information about pastures, especially with climate change in mind. 👉 Improve national and local skills in using satellite images for better pasture management. Several training workshops were held. 👉 Check if changes in herding practices improve the environment.   This project, applicable around the world, has shown how satellite technology can support sustainable pasture management. Thank you to the leader of the consortium, OREADE BRECHE with Thierry Clement and Lucie Royer, for making this work possible and to our partner, AVSF with Manon Lelarge and her great team including Bertrand RICARD and tsendayush munguntsetseg. It was an amazing project that we look forward to pursuing.   #Pastoralism #Sustainability #AgriculturalHeritage #ClimateResilience

🌊 Small-scale fisheries sustain more than 90% of the world's fishermen, and it's estimated that traditional fishing accounts for some 50% of global fish catches. Despite their importance, many traditional fishing communities are neither supported nor protected or even regulated. 🔎 How can we protect them while supporting their activity and helping them to modernize? What solution can we design to help them to be compliant and meet the regulations put in place by authorities? How can we innovate and assist authorities in setting up a system for monitoring small-scale fishing vessels by satellite? 🎣 At CLS we are proud to have created the NEMO system to meet these issues. NEMO is a simple, reliable, and affordable Vessel Monitoring System, specially designed for small-scale fishermen. The transmitter offers hybrid global connectivity, using GPRS/IoT networks in coastal areas and automatically switching to satellite systems when the vessel moves outside the range of terrestrial networks. The services range goes from basic delivery of data collected and processed in CLS’ data center, data integration with client’s fisheries monitoring center and access to CLS’ web platform for data visualization, to alert management and customized analytics. Thanks to our powerful network of local partners worldwide, NEMO is already aboard traditional fishing vessels around the globe. Our network of subsidiaries and resellers support fisheries authorities and fishermen, equipping them with the best solutions for safer, more sustainable fishing. 🌍 Like every year, we welcomed some of these partners during our annual VMS Seminar, held this year in Istanbul. 17 countries were represented, from Africa, Middle East and Europe. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly NEMO, as many countries wants to better monitor small-scale fishermen. This seminar was a great opportunity to strengthen our relationships, share insights, and explore new possibilities in advancing fisheries innovations. 🙏 We are grateful to all who attended and contributed to the enriching discussions and collaborations! Thank you for this gathering, and let's continue working together, hand in hand, to make tomorrow's fishing safer, more sustainable, and more compliant. #Vesselmonitoringsystem #Sustainablefishing #Tech4good #Blueeconomy #Fishingindustry #Innovation

🐢 It’s World Sea Turtle Day! 🤝 A perfect time to share how Upwell Turtles, in partnership with Mercator Ocean International & Lotek, is revolutionizing sea turtle conservation with cutting-edge micro-satellite tags. Tracking juvenile sea turtles, especially during their elusive "lost years," has always been a challenge as traditional satellite tags were too heavy for these tiny turtles. But now, with innovative micro-satellite tags as small as 2.5 grams, we are uncovering their mysterious oceanic journeys. 💡 Since 2021, 224 juvenile turtles have been monitored through collaborations with institutions worldwide, including the Florida Atlantic University Marine Lab and Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation. The data collected is providing groundbreaking insights - some juveniles have been observed diving over 100 meters shortly after release! 🛰 These advancements, made possible by using #Argos Services powered by CLS, not only deepens our understanding of sea turtle behavior but also aids in crafting targeted conservation strategies. Protecting potential “hatchling highways” and informing sustainable practices can ensure the persistence and thriving of these majestic creatures. For more on this groundbreaking research, check out the recent news on our Argos website 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAz4k6Te #WorldSeaTurtleDay
