Did you know that the glass bottle of the wine you're enjoying might be one of the most carbon-intensive items on your table? In the food industry, packaging is often insignificant. But there’s an exception for items like wine. How so? It's because of the bottle itself. The production of glass bottles requires substantial resources—1 kg of glass emits 900 grams of CO2e and consumes 200 liters of water. For a 75cl bottle of wine, the glass alone accounts for around 500 grams of CO2e emissions, with another 300-500 grams CO2e from grape production, winemaking, and transport. 🔑 Reducing the thickness of glass bottles and opting for more sustainable packaging options such as the use of recycled materials can significantly lower the carbon footprint of beverages. We endeavor to do this by building accessible tools for professionals in food, across different functions from CSR to Marketing, so they can take an active role in their organization’s sustainability initiatives. Today we already have tools for: • product-level environmental assessments at scale • eco-designing recipes • simulating impact reduction trajectories • supporting supplier relationship management • making data-backed green claims More features in the pipeline! With the food industry representing almost one-third of all global GHG emissions, 70% of all freshwater withdrawals and the primary cause of biodiversity loss worldwide, don’t you agree that it deserves a focused attention? In the spirit of the Olympic games happening right now in Paris, we’d like to wave one more #FLAG. ⛳ 😉 While over 5,600 companies have set science-based targets (#SBTi), a critical gap remains: few have comprehensively included Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (#AFOLU) emissions or removals. This sector, the second largest emitter after energy, accounts for 22% of global emissions. A significant figure, but it also represents just as great of a potential for reduction, especially for the food industry. Our latest blog post delves into the SBTi FLAG (Forest, Land, and Agriculture) Guidance designed to help companies integrate AFOLU emissions into their climate strategies and how the Carbon Maps platform calculates these emissions automatically.
