We are so saddened to hear of the death of 104 year old D-Day Veteran Donald Sheppard. Donald was called up for service aged 20. He had a hugely successful career in the Armed Forces and was Chairman of the Normandy Veterans’ Association in Southend for more than 20 years. Donald attended the virtual opening of the British Normandy Memorial in June 2021 from the National Memorial Arboretum. He is one of the Normandy Veterans featured in the new Winston Churchill Centre's Royal British Legion exhibition at the Memorial site. We are thinking of Donald's wife Sandra and all his family and friends. Rest in Peace, Don.

The formidable Standing with Giants team has arrived on site to begin removing the 1,475 silhouettes from the Memorial wild meadows. The Trust will be forever grateful to Dan and Janette Barton, as well as the wider team of many volunteers who have made this incredible and unforgettable anniversary installation possible, bringing many thousands of visitors to the Memorial. The Giants leave Ver-sur-Mer on Friday 13 September. The Trust very much hopes it will be possible for them to return in Spring 2025. Looking back at the creation of the D Day memorial with photos of the models standing beside the sculpture, I am reminded of how young these soldiers were who fought on the 6th June 1944. The models, who were of similar ages to the soldiers and who wear the same uniform and hold the same guns, makes the feet and impact of D Day that much greater. It was an emotional journey creating this sculpture and picturing these young courageous men fighting for our freedom.

It's the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on 6 June and we've produced a brilliant education pack, ‘D-Day 80: Remembering the Normandy Landings’, commissioned by the British Normandy Memorial. It includes photographs, letters and documents to help young people learn about this historic event. Whether you're a teacher or a parent, or just love history, it's well worth a look. Five years ago the stunning 'D-Day Sculpture' was installed at the British Normandy Memorial - it was the first part of this major project. The work by David Williams-Ellis Sculpture sits at the centre of the Memorial overlooking Gold Beach in Ver-sur-Mer. In June the world will see, for the first time, the sculpture alongside the completed Memorial. #dday80 #sculpture #secondworldwar #normandy #britishnormandymemorial #WW2 #anniversary

On Friday, seven Normandy Veterans joined HRH The Duke of Gloucester, Chair of British Normandy Memorial Lord Richard Dannatt, Viscount Henry Montgomery and Chair of The Spirit of Normandy Trust Richard Palusinski. The official 'Bon Voyage' dinner was held at the prestigious The Cavalry and Guards Club on Piccadilly ahead of our Veterans leaving for D-Day 80 commemorations in Normandy this June. A charity auction raised more than £10,000 for the Trust and the British Normandy Memorial. #DDay80 #Normandy #Veterans #History #SecondWorldWar
