A r t w o r k The Rozelle Parklands in Sydney, Australia, has been recently completed and is now accessible to the public. The Artwork designed by Studio Chris Fox envelops three large ventilation towers, part of the Westconnex Rozelle Interchange. These 25–30 meter tall and 10–14 meter in diameter cylindrical concrete towers are wrapped in a dynamic steel frame that supports zinc panels, green wall modules, and a twisting steel structure. The twisting form connects the towers and introduces a sense of movement, blending #Art with #Nature. The steel framework, pinned to the concrete towers and supported by the exhaust vent building below, also integrates a staircase and service platform for maintenance. We contributed with our expertise as structural engineers, aiming to help Chris Fox successfully merge Art, Engineering, and biophilic design, turning an industrial site into a visually engaging public space.
The Rozelle Parklands are now open and accessible to the public, including tunnels, service buildings, bridges, footpaths and cycle paths and sporting facilities! These recent images show the studio’s completed landmark urban artwork situated on the land of both Gadigal and Wangal clans of the Dharug language group. This integrated landscaped artwork looks to the histories and continued stories of the area, wrapping and interweaving between the Rozelle Interchange ventilation towers that take ground above the new parkland. The work takes precedent from the area that once was bursting with vibrant ecosystems and has transformed over millennia; previously mudflats and mangrove forests, more recently characterised by industrialised maritime and rail use, creating a habitat for urban biodiversity that runs along the edges of the parks, gardens and an urban forest. Mappings and generated patterns of sculptural looping and interweaving forms house and provide a framework for nature to take over. The hanging gardens of the tower link closely to the new walking paths, Rozelle Parklands Urban Forest, proximate parks and gardens, creating a connected ecosystem and providing further valuable habitat for native species.
