🚨 Our latest desk study on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and transformative change is out! NbS are gaining traction as a tool to address the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. But can they truly drive the transformative change that is needed? We've found that there is still a gap in the explicit assessment of different NbS outcomes and indicators of transformative change. Evidence is often incomplete and lacks comprehensive assessments across different scales and timeframes. Additionally, research tends to focus on specific biomes and regions. Despite these limitations, the available data strongly suggest a link between NbS interventions and transformative change. This underscores the urgent need for expanded research to better understand the full potential of NbS, including a broader geographic scope and a more precise definition of transformative change in NbS policies. News Alert! 🌍   The real-time acoustic monitoring devices designed by Dr Sarab Sethi (Department of Life Sciences and I-X) will be used to track avian biodiversity across Europe. The Bugg system, which has previously mapped Norwegian, Malaysian, Mexican, and Taiwanese ecosystems, will now be deployed in the Netherlands, France, and Spain as a part of the TABMON project funded by Biodiversa . 🌿🌐 The Bugg system consists of an acoustic monitoring device, which continuously records sound and uploads it to a cloud service where it is processed by artificial intelligence, which analyses the soundscape of the place. The Nature Restoration Law (#NRL) is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. On 17th June 2024, a majority of EU member states (MS) gave the final green light for its adoption during a Council meeting. The NRL sets legally binding targets to restore at least 20% of the EU's degraded land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. It sets obligations for nature restoration in all listed ecosystems – from terrestrial to marine, to freshwater and urban ecosystems. One of the next steps is for MS to adopt national restoration plans (NRPs) in an open, transparent as well as inclusive process, detailing how they intend to achieve the Nature Restoration Law (NRL) targets. Ecologic Institute, together with Trinomics and Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) were commissioned by the European Commission, DG Environment to compile existing guidance on ecosystem restoration. We put together a document that compiles useful sources for MS to inform nature restoration planning. It aims to support MS in the contextualization, design and planning of nature restoration measures in their NRPs and includes links to established guidelines and standards, key platforms and networks, and databases. The document comprises over 270 resources and also includes national resources provided by MS experts. Each resource is accompanied by a brief description, a link to the relevant platform, and index criteria for facilitating targeted searches (e.g., by region, restoration target, document type, and restoration stage).
