😱 We're affraid our Jan Tiedemann is not entirely truthful here. 🛰️ The EC approval of MSC's potential buy-in of up to 49.9% in HHLA Group was also confirmed by our spy satellite, as well as our agent infiltrators on the ground. 🕴️ 🧑💻 Jokes aside, Jan in 100% correct that Alphaliner is the best place for liner shipping data, news and market intelligence. ✅ 💡 Find out more at at https://okt.to/4TxHQi. 👈

📣 ShippingWatch: "According to Alphaliner, the cellular container fleet now has a capacity of over 30 million teu. Container shipping companies have added an additional 2.3 million teu to the fleet in the past year alone. Just eight years ago, global capacity was only 20 million teu. Since then, it has grown by over ten million teu." 👇 Read the full article by ShippingWatch below. ❗ ℹ️ ❕ To expand a bit, the pace of change has not been a great acceleration on the previous 10 Mteu tranche. It took the cellular fleet a similar nine years to grow from 10 Mteu to 20 Mteu. 📈 We expect this growth to only continue, with today’s orderbook more than double that of eight years’ ago, at 7.7 Mteu, versus 3.7 Mteu at the moment it passed 20 Mteu in 2016. ✅ Subscribe to our Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter to always stay on top of the latest news and developments in Liner shipping at https://okt.to/4TxHQi.

The cellular container fleet is growing at lightning speed and now has a capacity of 30 million teu. According to research firm Alphaliner, container shipping companies have added an additional 2.3 million teu to the fleet in the past year alone. However, this large capacity is currently temporarily being utilized as disruptions such as the attacks in the Red Sea and the strike on the US East and Gulf coasts mean ships are either sailing longer or waiting in ports. #shipping #container #portstrike

📢 The Nile River Delta ports, strategically located in the south eastern 'corner' of the Mediterranean and close to the northern terminus of the Suez Canal, have traditionally played a major role in container liner shipping. 🌍 With numerous container terminals established, recently-opened, or under development, Egypt’s ports might play an even more important role in the future, both as Med hubs, and gateways into a country with a growing population. ❓ The number of recently completed and ongoing projects, and the open question as to when the majority of Asia - Europe liner services will return to the Suez Canal, nevertheless raises the spectre of overcapacity in the port sector. ℹ️ Compared to the situation in mid-2023, before the launch of the Trans Misr Terminal (TMT) at Alexandria and the Hutchison terminal at Abu Qir, new facilities and ongoing expansions of existing piers will add around 10.00 Mteu of annual handling capacity to the Egyptian med ports within only a few years. 📰 With recently-launched terminals, CMA CGM and Evergreen have become invested in Egypt’s port sector, while Hapag-Lloyd and MSC will become invested with the launch of upcoming ports. ✅ Subscribe to the Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter for more details on this topic and other latest news in Liner shipping at https://okt.to/4TxHQi.

📢 The orderbook for ro-pax ferries in the large-size segment, i.e. exceeding a gross tonnage of 30,000, stood at 17 ships as of September 30ᵗʰ. Out of them, 11 were on order or under construction in China with the remaining 6 ships spread between European and Japanese shipyards. 🗺️ ⌛ With the imminent delivery of "SAINT-MALO" and "GNV POLARIS", the orderbook will further shrink. Excluding the few newbuild projects that are in the pipeline and Grimaldi Group’s planned nine-ship order, AXSRoRo doesn’t expect a double-digit ro-pax order boom in the short to medium term. 📊 🛳️ This is due to newbuild prices having gone through the roof, as container ship orderbooks have swelled exponentially lately. The Chinese shipyards building ro-pax ferries are also active in the PCTC segment, putting further pressure on prices and slots. 💰 ✅ Check out the latest news short-sea, deep-sea ro-ro freighters and ro-paxes in the latest issue of our monthly AXSRoRo newsletter and join our growing community at https://bit.ly/3XOzRqJ. 📰

📢 Transpacific trumps Jones Act in latest earnings-per-teu review 💰 A review of earnings by container lifted shows a significant reshuffle in carriers' comparative rankings over the past six months. 📈 Alphaliner’s study of operating profit per teu (EBIT - earnings before interest and tax) for the first six months of 2024 shows HMM and ZIM moving to the front of the sample, earning the highest amount by container and overtaking Matson Inc which generated the highest figure over 2023. 💸 HMM and ZIM made operating profits respectively of $390 and $364 per teu in the first half of the year, up from $150 and a loss of -$99 per box in the same period in 2023. 🥉 US-listed Matson posted a market-beating $334 per teu in 2023, having avoided the earnings collapse seen by most mainstream carriers in the second half of the year. However, the Jones Act and 'expedited transpacific service' specialist has fallen back to third place as of 30 June, as pure transpacific operators have surged ahead. ↗️ Taiwan’s Evergreen moves up from sixth to fourth place after logging a huge 29% year-on-year increase in volumes in the first six months of the year. This already helped the Taipei-based carrier to the highest operating margin for the first half of the year, as reported by Alphaliner in early September. ✅ Subscribe to the Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter for the latest news in Liner shipping at https://okt.to/4TxHQi.

📢 MSC and Premier Alliance will not apply 'hub & spoke' concept 🧠 A comparison between the new Asia–Europe networks recently unveiled by Gemini, MSC and the Premier Alliance shows that they are making very different strategical choices. 🌍 Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will limit the number of direct calls on mainline services to an absolute minimum and implement a 'hub and spoke' concept, while MSC will continue to serve a wide range of smaller Asian, Scandinavian and Baltic ports directly. ℹ️ Every alliance change is challenging for the big ports as they may win or lose business. The upcoming changes on 1 February 2025 appear to be good news for Singapore, Cai Mep, Felixstowe and Hamburg. Meanwhile, Antwerp, Yantian and Tanjung Pelepas will see fewer mainline vessels making weekly calls. 💡 The Premier Alliance (ONE, HMM and Yang Ming), Gemini Cooperation (Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd) and MSC have all released two versions of their new Asia–Europe networks: a first one with loops routed via Suez and an alternative scenario with Cape-routings. ✅ Subscribe to the Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter for the latest news in Liner shipping at https://okt.to/4TxHQi.
