Honda was an early proponent of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), only to realize that it had backed the wrong technology. Partnering in September with General Motors, the Japanese carmaker now aims to launch two battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for North American buyers in 2024. New CEO Toshihiro Mibe also announced in his first month on the job that the company will shift entirely to zero-emission BEVs and FCEVs by 2040, in part by developing its own platform. The carmaker shook off the effects of the pandemic better than most, posting an annual 4% gain in operating profit. For the current year, Honda forecasts a 10% increase in sales to some 5 million vehicles.

For an astounding 13th straight year, Apple claims the top spot in Fortune’s annual ranking of corporate reputation, based on a survey of almost 3,800 executives, directors, and analysts.

In a challenging year for car companies across the globe, Honda Motor saw revenues decline more than 4% and profits slump by almost a quarter. The Japanese automaker's core "model mix" of most lower-margin makes was partly to blame. Elsewhere, elevated recall-related costs (faulty airbags) plus higher rebate costs and unfavorable exchange rates hurt the company's bottom line. Honda had been forecasting a better outlook for this year, but that was before the pandemic hit. Now all bets are off. In May, the company reported its lowest operating profit in four years and declined to provide an outlook for the rest of the year.

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
