As Bain & Co. celebrates its 50th anniversary, the management consulting firm boasts locations in 65 cities and 40 countries worldwide, and has focused heavily on retention, creating a new program to rotate staff across teams. At the same time, Bain has lessened an emphasis on degree requirements and job experience when interviewing candidates for certain professional roles, prioritizing industry-specific skills instead.
In its embrace of DEI initiatives, Bain achieved a perfect score in 2022 from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for fostering LGBTQ workplace inclusion. Last year, the company launched the First at Bain affinity group, a community for staff who are first-generation college students or first to experience a career in professional services, and expanded its other affinity groups, including Black at Bain, Women at Bain, and Diverse Abilities at Bain.
Instead of eschewing AI, Bain has partnered with OpenAI, integrating the technology into its management systems. About a third of staff use OpenAI services daily, and 15% use it weekly.
The financial services company made a splash in 2022 with the announcement of its 10-year commitment to invest $1.1 billion in pro bono services.
- All employees have an advisor to help them strategize and reflect on their career.
- In 2022, the company expanded its mental health offerings, giving employees access to one-on-one counseling as part of its partnership with Spring Health.
- Bain has expanded its training for supervisors, including such topics as how to foster a growth mindset and how to give and receive feedback.
- The Balanced, Energized, Successful Talent (BEST) program provides employees access to courses in physical and mental health, resilience, and personal development.

"Bain & Company has been truly amazing. I fit right in as a newer employee, and right from the onboarding, I knew I had found the right company for me."
Employees say:
"The people are extraordinarily talented and hardworking. By seeing everybody around you giving the best version of themselves at work, it makes you want to improve yourself and your contributions to the team. At any point I have at least a handful of people I can call at any moment and know they will make time to answer my questions or give me feedback on a situation."
Employees say:
"Fully supportive management. High emphasis placed on professional development and feedback. Great deal of focus on teamwork and building supportive teams. Walk the walk with 'a Bainie will never let another Bainie fail.'"
The consulting firm continues to invest in its diversity and inclusion efforts, including holding a Diversity Summit in May 2021 that sought to bring more visibility to the company’s many affinity groups by bringing together their annual gatherings at this weeklong event. Bain & Co also re-credentialed over 100 roles to prioritize skills instead of requiring four-year degrees. The company plans to expand the number of revised job descriptions in the coming year. “From the first day, I felt welcomed and valued,” says an employee. “I have never experienced a workplace where the importance of employee well-being (in all areas) was made such a priority, and the benefits [and] compensation were so high.”
Employees say:
“Bain is a remarkable place. We have talented, collaborative, compassionate people driving toward outcomes in a cohesive operating model. We care immensely about one another, enjoy each other's company, and are constantly seeking to drive a wonderful experience for the full global team. This behavior is embedded in our culture, and seen daily from our team members—whether pitching in to support someone who is having a hard time, finding time to champion someone as they learn something new or are at an inflection point in their career, or finding opportunities to help our clients (both within and outside of our scope of work). I am proud to work at Bain & Company.”
Employees say:
“Bain's culture is unbeatable. It's the most magical mix of incredibly smart people that produce amazing work, coupled with a genuine care for each other's success and well-being. I couldn't imagine working anywhere else over the last few years as we navigated COVID, remote work, children home from school, quarantines and other life stressors. Bain has been incredibly supportive to me as a working mom. I am given a great amount of flexibility to do my job and be present for my daughter. There is full trust that I will get my job done, and more importantly there is empathy that being a working parent right now is hard as we continue to navigate COVID and returning to the office.”
Employees say:
“Incredibly welcome and inclusive environment. Bain cares about their employees and they show it in their actions, not just in their praise. I am incredibly grateful to work for this organization. Bain is also an incredible place to build your career–the responsibility employees are given, the resources, the leadership, the culture–it is truly a special place to be.”
