Exciting news for today – we are continuing Recycling & Waste business and operations in new ownership. Summa Equity has signed an agreement to acquire recycling & waste business from Fortum through its portfolio company NG Group. The sale of Recycling & Waste business is an expected and successful outcome of a comprehensive strategic review, which was initiated in autumn 2023 to explore whether the business might find better growth and value-creation opportunities under new ownership. “With great excitement, we’re welcoming a solid new owner, who is committed to growing and developing our business further. Material scarcity is one of the biggest societal challenges we need to solve, and our Waste-to-Materials strategy outlines a solid roadmap to this end. With the commitment of the new owner, we’re able to execute our ambitious roadmap”, says Timo Piispa, Senior Vice President, Fortum Recycling & Waste.

We have today signed an agreement to sell our Recycling & Waste business to Summa Equity. The divestment is in line with our Nordic strategy with focus on clean energy and provides us the opportunity to put enhanced focus on our core operations in clean power generation to drive electrification and build preparedness for future growth. With the new ownership, we see that the Recycling & Waste businesses have even better opportunities to grow: “We are very pleased to have found a very suitable new owner that is well positioned to further enhance and drive future growth opportunities for the recycling and waste business. Next to the clean energy transition, material scarcity is one of the biggest societal challenges we need to solve. Now is the right time for the new owner to take over”, says our President and CEO Markus Rauramo. https://lnkd.in/gvF4HweD

On 5 June, millions of people around the world will celebrate the UN's World Environment Day. Since 1973, the UN has supported environmental efforts and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world. This year’s Environment Day focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience - the last two may not be the most prevalent challenges in the Nordic countries. However, over five decades already, Fortum Recycling & Waste has contributed to a sound balance of nature by, for example, removing more than 10 million tonnes of hazardous waste from the cycle and carrying out soil remediation projects in Finland, Sweden and Denmark. A big CHEER to Environment Day 2024 - let's keep up the good work together! 🍀 https://lnkd.in/dtCfWs4R

Jatkossa Suomessa voidaan lajitella muovipakkauksia jopa 50 000 tonnia vuodessa. Suunniteltu investointi nostaa samalla lajittelu- ja kierrätysastetta kohti EU:n asettamia tavoitteita. "Uskomme, että tällä yhteistyömallilla voimme parhaiten tehostaa kotimaista muovinkierrätystä. Sumin lajittelulaitos lajittelee muovit, jotka me pesemme ja granuloimme uusioraaka-aineeksi. Näin pääsemme keskittymään Fortum Circo -uusiomuovin valmistukseen ja suuntaamaan toimintaa tuoteperheen laajentamiseksi. Markkinoilla on kysyntää laadukkaille ja räätälöidyille uusiomuovimateriaaleille”, Fortumin muoviliiketoiminnan johtaja Toni Ahtiainen kertoo. Fortum Recycling & Waste is investing 10 million euros to build a new state-of-the-art IBA (Incineration Bottom Ash) metal refinery for non-ferrous metals in Gävle, Sweden.  The new plant, to be started up in the coming autumn, increases the recycling rate of metals, and thereby reduces the need for extraction of critical, virgin metal materials. ♻ “At the new metal refinery for non-ferrous metals, we will for example recycle stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass recovered from bottom ash from the waste to energy plants around the Nordics. The recycled metals are sent to the smelters to be used for new metal production," explains Toni Ahtiainen, Head of Business Line Ash & Slag at Fortum Recycling & Waste The new plant is one small step towards Fortum Recycling & Waste’s mission to lead the way towards revolution of materials by transforming waste streams back to essential raw materials. There’re currently discussions on-going on EU level on how to secure the future need for critical metals and how to take the environmental aspect into account. Fortum Recycling & Waste’s new initiative supports the upcoming needs to secure recycled materials for the industry. Read more 👇   #rethinkingrecycling #metalrecycling #metalrefinery

In many ways, plastic is a versatile and flexible material. However, virgin plastic production relies on fossil oils, and there's already enough plastic in the world as it is.   💡 While we must think about how to decrease the use of plastic and recycle it as efficiently as possible, we must also develop solutions to produce the plastic we do need in a way that preserves natural resources.   Through our Carbon2x programme, we at Fortum Recycling & Waste are creating a new type of plastic born from CO2. The advantage of binding carbon into a raw material such as plastic is that keeps it in circulation. ♻   As we celebrate #EarthDay today, it is important to remind ourselves of the importance of rethinking plastics - in a circular world, we all have a possibility to build a better tomorrow. 🌍   Read more about the future of plastics from our blog.👇 #RethinkingPlastics #RethinkingRecycling

Last week, Fortum Recycling & Waste had the great pleasure of hosting a visit from Fortum CEO Markus Rauramo at the ash refinery in Pori and the Battery Recycling Business in the Harjavalta hydrometallurgical plant. The visits included tours of the facilities, discussions with the staff, and updates on the business. At the ash refinery, Fortum’s novel technology represents a significant step towards a circular economy for household waste by recycling all types of fly ash. In Harjavalta, where Fortum Battery Recycling started commercial operations a year ago, the recycling process recovers critical metals from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, as well as battery production waste, and produces secondary metals for new lithium-ion batteries on an industrial scale. #RethinkingRecycling #CircularEconomy #Recycling #LifeAtFortum
