Anders Tånger, CEO of Photon Sports Technologies AB, is on a mission: to give every sports team access to sophisticated tools, rather than this being left to the teams that are already successful and rich. In particular, he spotted that in Europe female football players did not have access to the same quality of data as their male counterparts. “We recognised that while the women’s football market was growing, it lacked the same opportunities as men’s football due to limited budgets,” Anders told us. “This realisation led us to partner with the Swedish Women’s League as our first customer in 2022.” The technology – which tracks and analyses body movements using 3D images of athletes – is not only affordable, it’s also highly portable. Which means it can be used where the players are training, enabling it to capture authentic movement. It’s already having an impact, helping coaches and athletes spot areas that can be improved. And now Photon Sports is looking beyond football and at any sport that features explosive movement, from handball to speed skating. #Finnish #defence #industry growing strongly, investors eyeing dual-use products in particular! Tesi has today released Defence - Market study on Finnish military product and dual use companies! Key findings: - The Finnish Defence industry is a mix of well-known traditional #manufacturing firms and emerging #startups – #AR / #VR and #robotics quickest growers. - There are only a handful of pure #miltech startups in Finland, and most emerging ventures are dual use firms whose applicability is mostly in #support, #logistics and #C4I 1 activities. The most prominent subcategory of startups is #Sensing, #connectivity and #cybersecurity. - Although the #Finnish #Defence #Forces are experienced in arctic warfare, #arctic #knowledge isn’t visible in most Defence firms’ offering. The clear exception is firms targeting #Naval customers, where over 60% of the identified firms possess significant arctic experience. - The five different categories used in this report have very different financial characteristics: the dual use technology category has by far the highest revenue growth rates around 30-40%, whereas Established defence, basic manufacturing and professional services are profitable but mostly lack double-digit growth rates. Miltech firms, by far the smallest category, typically display moderate growth rates and positive but weak profitability. - Dual use technology and miltech firms’ sales development has been strong, and accelerating, in recent years. With total sales around €235m in 2022, they have grown at a median CAGR of 5-8% in recent years. VC investments in these emerging firm categories have similarly grown, with a peak year in 2022 due to large investment rounds in a few notable dual use technology firms. - Most Defence firms are privately held by Finnish owners, and VC funding is notable only in Dual use technology and Miltech firms. The Finnish government is also a notable investor through its’ investment firms. - Most board members are Finnish males. The share of newly appointed foreign board members increased gradually between 2014-22, but retracted in 2023. The current share lies at 21% (with a further 2% being dual citizens). The share of female board members has also increased in recent years, with 18% of current Defence firm board members being female. - Investor syndicates are typically quite diverse in terms of investor nationalities. ❓ Are unicorn founders just like the rest of us? Or are they somehow different? Fearless, perhaps? Smarter, maybe? I finally had the chance to dive into “Exit Stories”, written by fellow entrepreneurs Matias Mäenpää and Anssi Kiviranta, while relaxing on a beach chair this summer ⛱. Here’s what struck me most about the qualities these founders seem to share: ✅ Curiosity Always asking, "How can we do better?" They challenge the status quo, knowing that just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it must remain that way. ✅ Stupendously high ambition They might not know every step of the way, but they’re clear on the destination. When others say, “It’s impossible,” they think, “Let’s try anyway.” ✅ Confidence and scary resilience As in poker ♠♥♦♣ 🙏, they decided to go “all in”. Ready to fight until they lose everything. The so-called "death valley" is for the others. Failure isn’t even part of their vocabulary, and giving up is never an option. ✅ Product and sales focus They’re laser-focused on the customer— not investors or grants. Striving for perfection (it’s a game of inches), they never forget that, after all, the clients pays the bills— and the salaries. ✅ Team-building Aware of their own limits, they surround themselves with the best complementary talents. They engage their teams without hesitating to share the cake. ✅ Speed and agility They fail fast, pivot quickly, and experiment constantly. 👉 They don't do it for the money For them, it’s about achieving something big, making an impact. Money sounds more like a consequence than a reason. And what about luck 🤞 ? As Micha Kaufman (unicorn founder #11, Fiverr) says: "luck is when preparation meets opportunity". I could write pages on my takeaways from this book, but LinkedIn would again tell me I've reached the maximum character limit. So, further to one of my earlier posts entitled “Ideas are cheap. Execution is everything” —which, coincidentally, also featured Matias Mäenpää— (see link in comment) here’s a final thought from Lukasz Gadowski (unicorn founder #6, Delivery Hero): “Both strategy and execution need to be right.” And when it comes to strategy, there are two layers: one is the business model itself; the other is more like tactics. How to make the positive spiral turn, so that one success leads to the next. A huge congrats to these 12 🦄 founders for their inspiring success, and special kudos to Matias and Anssi for capturing and sharing their journeys. Finsilva Oyj, a forest and natural capital company majority owned by CapMan Natural Capital through Dasos Capital funds, is deepening its collaboration with the Finnish energy company Pohjan Voima to increase renewable energy production on Finsilva's lands. 🔄⚡️   The strategic partnership aims to identify and develop new opportunities for wind farms, solar parks, and battery storage facilities. Five project areas have already been identified and progressed to the preliminary planning phase with the collective potential to generate an estimated 500 megawatts of wind and solar energy. Once the projects reach the investment phase, Finsilva and its owners will have the opportunity to make minority investments in the projects developed within the co-operation framework.   “Projects offer our investors the opportunity to further invest in renewable energy produced in Finland. Securing of forest sustainability and biodiversity are at the core of our activities also in the renewable energy projects,” says Sami Veijalainen, Partner at CapMan Natural Capital.   In addition to the newly identified projects, three of Pohjan Voima’s current wind farm projects are already located partially on land owned by Finsilva. #capman #renewableenergy #naturalcapital
