The journey to net zero – an impossible task? Based on current figures and market conditions in the European offshore wind industry, the answer is “yes”. Reaching the 2030 target of 163 GW of offshore wind power requires unrealistic annual growth rates of 25% in capacity and EUR 350 billion of funding in a declining market. Is that it then? Not necessarily. An analysis performed by Implement Consulting Group shows an alternative pathway, where reaching the EU’s long-term goal of 450 GW by 2050 is not only realistic but also comes with the added bonus of saving the European taxpayers EUR 200 billion. Dutch/German grid operator TenneT TSO B.V. increased its investement activities with over 30 percent in the first half of 2024 in comparison to the same period in 2023. It seems like the energy transition is progressing very slowly, don't you think? But new data actually show that we are on track in many areas 🙌 . Like in #solarpower, for example. In 2022 (the latest data available) the global solar production reached almost 1,300 twh. This would be enough to supply Germany, France and Italy with electricity for an entire year. Isn’t that worth a “WOW”? Far too often, large offshore wind tenders are not coordinated across national borders. This creates significant challenges for the entire sector. It becomes very difficult to plan when Denmark announces a 6 GW tender one day, and Belgium does almost the same a few days later ❌   On June 26th, the WindEurope board elections will take place. Port Esbjerg has put forward my candidacy. If elected, I will work for greater coherence in offshore tenders. This is compounded by the fact that the number of tenders fluctuates significantly from year to year. In 2020, 21 wind farms was tendered in Europe; the next year, none at all ⛔   The lack of planning increases the risk of over-investment. How are companies supposed to navigate without knowing what the immediate future holds? One year looks fantastic, and the next year, the order books are empty. It is difficult to run a business under these conditions, and it is equally challenging to maintain a stable capacity. This capacity is crucial, given Europe's ambitious green transition goals. And if the industry lacks capacity, we will not meet those goals. 🤚 Currently, offshore businesses do not trust politicians much. They say one thing, but something else happens. We must address this through closer collaboration. We need to coordinate the timing of tenders and ensure greater transparency. The industry must know what is coming and when. This way, the offshore sector will be better positioned to perform optimally and thus help achieve the ambitious green transition goals we all desire.

The corporate PPA market continues to grow! 📈 According to BNEF the global Corporate PPA market reached 46 GW cumulative installed capacity in 2023, with the European region growing 75 % from the previous year. 🌟 Although growth numbers for the Nordic region are not disclosed, it is a fair assumption that (as previous years) Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland have contributed well to this trend. Furthermore, amid falling market prices, the Nordic trend seems to continue into 2024 with recent PPA deals announced by corporates like Borealis, Equinix, Mölnlycke, among others. 🤩 Note that besides the Nordics you also can partner with World Kinect to elevate your PPA journey across APAC, EMEA, and North America! 🌍

Ørsted has agreed to sell its onshore wind and solar business in France to ENGIE, a move the Denmark-based wind farm developer said would allow it to prioritize other western European markets. The deal, which will see the French energy firm acquiring OSTWIND International, OSTWIND Engineering and their subsidiaries, collectively known as Ostwind France, will mark the end of Ørsted’s activities in France. “As part of our updated business plan, we revised our build-out ambitions towards 2030 with an emphasis on where we believe we can realize the most value for Ørsted,” said Kieran White, senior vice president and head of onshore in Region Europe at Ørsted. “Building on this plan, we’ve decided to concentrate our efforts on the UK, Irish, German, and Spanish markets for onshore wind and solar, in Europe. In this light, I’m very pleased that we’ve found a good future owner of Ostwind France in ENGIE.” Ostwind France has been developing #renewable energy projects for over two decades. The operator boasts 54 MW in operation and 24 MW of wind projects under construction. Ørsted bought Ostwind France in 2022 as part of its acquisition of French and German #onshore group Ostwind. The German part of the Ostwind transaction has been fully integrated into Ørsted and would remain a focus of its European onshore #wind and #solar investments, the Danish firm said. “Ørsted’s German onshore wind business has successfully advanced a number of projects towards final investment decision and continues to develop an attractive pipeline of onshore wind and solar PV projects,” the developer said. 🔲 Ørsted is a member of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network. Like in 2023, Finland is again in the lead of the competition for most often occurring negative prices during H1-2024. This is another symptom of the severe flexibility deficit we currently have in Finland, manifesting itself either in security of supply and affordability concerns or in energy waste. For both, the cure is more flexibility from both demand and supply, not forgetting a need for an adequate national, Nordic and European energy infrastructure.
