The ECG Tech Board has launched a new online form to increase collabroration and idea-sharing on tech/digital topics in the Finished Vehicle Logistics (FVL) sector. It is open to all interested actors of the FVL industry. Tech Board leaders Karol Niznik (Auto1) and Neringa Jasiulioniene (Manvesta) are eager to hear from you. Why submitting your ideas? 🌟 - Get feedback: Get valuable insights and suggestions on your project ideas from industry peers; - Find partners: Collaborate with other companies for proofs of concept;. - Share success: Highlight and share the results of successful initiatives to inspire others; - Form working groups: Identify key topics that could benefit from joint efforts under the Digitalisation Working Group. The Tech Board will review submissions quarterly, promoting the best ideas for development. About the ECG Tech Board 📊 Founded by ECG President Wolfgang Göbel in 2023, the board aims to leverage technology to enhance FVL efficiency. It includes IT-savvy professionals from logistics, car manufacturers and IT companies. A new, unique multinational armoured vehicle concept was unveiled at Eurosatory. Funded by the European Union and nine member countries, the Patria-coordinated concept is planned to enter production by 2027. "We have now proceeded to the concept testing stage, and the performance of the future solution can be tested in practice," said Mikko Karppinen, Senior Vice President, Protected Mobility and Defence Systems of Patria, at a launch event at Eurosatory 2024 in Paris. The EDF FAMOUS 2 project is financed by €95 million from the EU. A total of nine participating EU member states contribute €19 million to the project. The consortium includes a total of 35 companies (see the list at the end of the article). If needed, the armoured vehicles may be assembled in the customer country. Patria, the Finnish provider of defence, security and aviation life-cycle support services, has plenty of experience in technology transfer, e.g. with 6X6 APC (Armoured Personel Carrier), to Poland, Croatia, South Africa, Slovakia, Japan and Latvia. Virtual tire development is now possible   How long before will we be able to design and build a tire in a computer; test it in a virtual environment and have it accepted by a car maker? Right now! It’s not yet commonplace; and there are still weaknesses in the models, but in this special feature, we describe one tire that Goodyear created and then Indian car maker Mahindra tested in a totally virtual environment with no physical prototypes. We also look at how tire makers can join this new trend and how tire makers, car makers and others are working together to create effective digital twins of the full suspension and drive system of a vehicle. Over the last month or so, most of the tire makers around the world have announced their results for the three months to March 2024. The results confirm the trend seen earlier that most of the top tire brands are suffering from weak demand while the smaller tire makers are improving their profits and their market shares globally. We also offer our rankings of the top tire makers and how dependent they are on input raw materials prices. For the first time in a few years, we rank Michelin top, despite a small decline in revenue. The top two – Bridgestone and Michelin – swapped positions on the basis of a weak yen and a strong dollar. The most profitable tire maker in the period, however, was the small China-based company Sentury, followed by Toyo. We’ve also looked at hard, peer-reviewed academic research into tire wear particles. This has become a hot topic in the academic community and the volume of independent research is becoming overwhelming – unless you have a clear guide to the latest publications and their findings. The research confirms our view that the tire industry is not always as transparent as it claims on the characterisation of these particles. Nano particles comprise the vast majority of these particles by number (if not by mass) and they can become airborne and can be breathed in, and the evidence is building that they do cause damage to living organisms. We also offer our regular column on the natural rubber industry, provided by Helixtap, and the expectation is that prices will drop, even if EUDR-compliant materials will become more expensive. As the EU ban on imports of rubber and carbon black is due to come into force at the end of June, we note that the latest customs data shows that EU imports of these materials appear to be rising, even if total imports are well below the quotas set by the EU about 18 months ago.     Our latest 48-page report gives deep insights into how the industry is changing and helps you understand what is changing across the industry value chain.
