#HotOffThePress - We will supply a hybrid-electric propulsion system for an 11,000 dwt Limestone Carrier. The vessel, contracted by Montreal-based The CSL Group Inc., will be the world’s first fully electric battery-capable self-unloading vessel. It will initially run on a hybrid diesel and battery system, with 50% of the total battery capacity installed, replacing diesel with electric power. By 2031, the aim is to run the ship entirely on electric power, reducing carbon emissions to less than 10%. The order reflects CSL’s focus on reducing its emissions profile via a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy. Wärtsilä has been closely involved in developing the concept for the hybrid-electric propulsion system selected to optimise the engine and battery loading for the ship’s operating conditions. “Wärtsilä is committed to making decarbonised shipping possible, so we are delighted to be supporting CSL with solutions that enhance the sustainability of their fleet. This is a short sea shipping vessel that will operate with a lot of manoeuvring and variable load profiles, and electrification and hybridisation systems are the most efficient for such vessels.” - Torsten Bussow, Director, Electrical & Power Systems Business at Wärtsilä Marine. To commemorate Wärtsilä’s 190th anniversary, we celebrate the trailblazing colleagues whose contributions have driven our company’s success. Trusauskas Darius’ career began as a student at Klaipėda University, where he chose to complete an internship at the mechanical ship repair workshop of the Western Shipyard. He was immediately placed into the rudder repair group, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. When the production workshop transitioned to become the Wärtsilä branch in Lithuania, Darius had already established himself as a key team member. Discover how his passion for the craft and his dedication to continuous professional development have enabled him to be at the forefront of technology. https://wartsi.ly/3LBQz7i  #Wartsila190 #FuelYourPower #WärtsiläPeople

On 28 June 2024, Wärtsilä Marine held a customer seminar in Singapore titled “Sailing Towards Sustainability: Innovations in Maritime Decarbonisation.” The seminar brought together approximately 90 participants for discussions, technical insights and networking. The highlight of the seminar was a compelling panel discussion that explored the opportunities and challenges of maritime decarbonisation. Our esteemed experts delved into the critical challenges and innovative solutions shaping the maritime industry’s path toward sustainability. Some key takeaways from the panel discussion: ⚡ Regulations should stimulate, not hinder, cleaner energy transitions. 🎯 Unified regulations are needed to streamline efforts and meet global targets. 💡 Aligning regional regulations like EU ETS and Fuel EU with IMO measures is crucial for a coherent global framework. 🛠️ Focus on removing process waste within the industry. 📈Scalable, competitive, clean energy solutions are essential for adoption. 🚢 A robust framework to share transition risks among stakeholders is necessary. 🧩 No single fuel solution exists; various factors must be considered. ⚖️ Evaluate supply chain implications for feasibility and sustainability. 🌊 The maritime industry must take proactive steps toward decarbonisation rather than waiting. 👷🏻♂️The human factor should be prioritised. Reduce seafarers’ burdens and ensure their well-being. Skill development and training are essential for the workforce. In conclusion, our panel highlighted the need for a balanced, collaborative approach to maritime decarbonisation. By aligning regulations, fostering innovation, and prioritising human factors, the industry can effectively navigate the path to a sustainable future. Many thanks to the esteemed panellists Kenneth Lim, Capt. Raghav Gulati, James Forsdyke and Hazizi Halim. Wärtsilä’s Sanjay Verma moderated the panel discussion. The event also featured a series of technical presentations designed to empower the participants with actionable insights and innovative solutions to support their decarbonisation efforts. These presentations included: ✅ Wartsila 2-Stroke Engines Decarbonisation Solutions: Keeping Fleets Fit for the Future by Stam Achillas. ✅ Sustainable Shipping: Powering with Green Fuels by Sanjay Verma. ✅ Navigation Decarbonisation with Confidence by Chris Chung. ✅ Shaft Line Solutions - Our Future Technology by Masaki Mihara. Such a special gathering would not be complete without a cake to celebrate Wärtsilä’s 190th anniversary with all the participants. Thank you to everyone who joined us and for the productive discussions. #Singapore #MaritimeIndusty #collaboration #Wartsila190 #decarbonisation

We designed and developed our first marine engines in the 1950s. Two decades later, we entered the energy sector, and it was during this time that we started to pursue and research future fuels. As we entered the 21st century, we've continued to break boundaries. If you were to ask Wärtsilians themselves, the company’s success over the past decades has been built on its Ostrobothnian mentality and “can do” attitude. #Wartsila190 #ThrowbackThursday #history
