Today we are concluding an outstanding PHEMS consortium meeting! This day included a tour of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust premises and provided great insights into communication practices and interdependencies within the different PHEMS functions. VEIL.AI together with Erasmus MC held a workshop about metrics to compare models created with synthetic data against models developed from real world data. The workshop demonstrated the complexities of anonymization and synthetization and the critical role that synthetic data plays in PHEMS. A big thank you to Bruno Robalo and Brian van Winden from Erasmus MC for their hard work and cooperation in putting this workshop together. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the event organizers at GOSH DRIVE and HUS Helsingin yliopistollinen sairaala as well as all participants for their contributions to the success of this event. Today was the first official day of the PHEMS consortium meeting. VEIL.AI CTO Timo Miettinen hosted a workshop on privacy enhancing technologies remotely. This presentation was targeted towards the entire consortium and the objective was to introduce the concepts of anonymization and synthetization, their advantages and uses as well as the relevance of these technologies to the PHEMS project. The day also featured multiple informative presentations lead by other PHEMS partners for example on the PHEMS terminology, federated node and analytics as well as OHDSI OMOP. Overall, the first day has provided a deep dive into the PHEMS use cases as well as the main concepts surrounding PHEMS. Meeting with the project partners in person has provoked astute discussions and offered valuables takes on the technical execution of the project. The insights gathered during the meeting will certainly be of help in the next phase to ensure a practical design and successful implementation of the anonymization and synthetization processes. This week VEIL.AI is present as a key technology partner at the PHEMS project consortium meeting hosted at the GOSH DRIVE Office in London on June 18-19. We have partnered with pediatric hospitals and technology companies across Europe to enable transborder data collaborations of sensitive health data for research 🌍 The PHEMS project presents an innovative approach to managing pediatric health data. It aims to enhance cross-border collaboration, improve healthcare outcomes, and pave the way for a more integrated and efficient healthcare system in Europe. PHEMS strives to facilitate easier access to health data, thereby advancing federated health data analysis and creating services for generating shareable synthetic datasets. This project is particularly focused on addressing the challenges posed by privacy concerns and the complexity of data sharing due to varying interpretations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the upcoming European Health Data Space (EHDS). In the ”Future Clinical Trials”, VEIL.AI helped Bayer to anonymize the data with such a high quality that one could draw the same conclusions from the anonymized data as from the traditional pseudonymized individual-level research data. Today we are wrapping up a fantastic WISDOM Project Kick-Off Event! The day has provided great insights into the Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthiritis and Myasthenia Gravis databases as well as relevant EU regulation, notably the European Health Data Space (EHDS). WP2 lead Saarela Janna, Research Director at Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), held a presentation and led the discussion regarding the work package, enabling us to attain a more comprehensive understanding of the available data. The thorough discussions and collaborative spirit have set the stage for great advancements in the management of chronic immune-mediated diseases. As a key technology partner, VEIL.AI has the opportunity to contribute our expertise in next-generation anonymization technology and synthetic data generation to overcome the challenge of secure cross-border data sharing within the WISDOM project. Vor einer Woche war ich in Finnland & will noch ein paar Erkenntnisse mit euch teilen. Natürlich ist das Finnische System nicht mit unserem vergleichbar. Es ist viel zentraler aufgestellt & gleichzeitig ist der staatliche Sektor stark durch unternehmerische Initiativen unterstützt. Diese Verwobenheit kennen wir in Deutschland weniger, unser Gesundheitssystem ist sehr komplex und weniger durch Staat als von Selbstverwaltung geprägt. 3 Dinge, die ich deshalb besonders bemerkenswert fand & für überdenkenswert für Deutschland halte: 👉 Der Europäische Gesundheitsdatenraum kommt und wir sollten ihn als Chance proaktiv angehen. In Finnland erfolgt der Aufbau großer Datenbanken unter staatlicher Trägerschaft. Das sollte auch für uns richtungswesend sein. Ich denke dabei bspw an Projekte wie den Aufbau einer Genomdatenbank in Finnland, an den Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz in der Medizinforschung oder die Anonymisierung von Gesundheitsdaten. Gerade was die Sekundärnutzung von Gesundheitsdaten anbelangt können Finnland und wir uns Piloten vorstellen mit Blick auf den EHDS. Bereits vorhandenen Daten aus den beiden Ländern können geteilt und gemeinsam von Wissenschaftlern und Unternehmen genutzt werden. 👉 Silo-Denken behindert die Digitalisierung. Deshalb müssen Ministerien, nachgeordnete Behörden, Leistungserbringer – alle Akteure konsequent und ressortübergreifend zusammenarbeiten. Dafür benötigen wir mehr multiprofessionelle, agile Teams, die ohne Scheuklappen Lösungen entwickeln. In Finnland stehen z.B. multiprofessionelle Teams zur Verfügung, die die Gesundheit holistisch angehen und schon frühzeitig Präventionsprogramme auf den Einzelnen abstimmen. Arbeitgebende zahlen dies, weil die Krankheitstage damit reduziert werden sollen. 👉 Mit dem finnischen Innovationsfonds Sitra hat Finnland ein Instrument, um in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen Innovationen anzustoßen, u.a. im Bereich der Gesundheitsdaten. Sitra betreibt heute anders als früher keine Förderung von Startups, sondern agiert als Thinktank und Treiber von strukturellen Entwicklungen im staatlichen Bereich (z.B. der Schaffung eines Metadatenkatalogs für Gesundheitsdaten). Die Finanzierung der Aktivitäten von Sitra erfolgt über Erträge, die aus dem Anlagevermögen des Fonds (ca. 1 Mrd. Euro) fließen (derzeit rund 30 Mio. Euro p.a.). Vergleichbare Einrichtungen existieren auch in anderen skandinavischen Ländern, aber auch bei uns in Deutschland wie z.B. SPRINT oder auch die Bayerische Forschungsstiftung. Flächendeckende Lösungen und infrastrukturelle Angebote um Daten im Gesundheitssektor sinnvoll zu verschränken könnten wie in Finnland einen Schwerpunkt bilden. Insgesamt eröffnen der EHDS und grenzübergreifende Kooperation in Europa neue Chancen, die Gesundheitsversorgung der Bevölkerung zu steigern. Durch gemeinsame Projekte und Initiativen können wir es schaffen, die Vision des EHDS umzusetzen und die gesundheitsbezogenen Herausforderungen gemeinschaftlich zu bewältigen.
