At our Finnish mills, we had to say goodbye to many great summer workers that are getting back to school, but soon we get to welcome new hard-working students, as we are starting to go through apprenticeship applications. This year UPM received a staggering 3,917 apprenticeship applications! 🧑🔧Our paid apprenticeships last about two years, consisting of practical work training and theoretical studies. The apprenticeship programmes vary from the security sector to electrical work and production. At the end of the programme, the apprentice graduates to a profession.  🎓“I think the people here are really nice, the work is varied and the salary is competitive. In my opinion gender doesn't matter at mill work, it's your attitude that counts more. The work requires pressure tolerance and problem-solving skills. A study group found seven new spider species from the UPM conservation area in Uruguay  💚 UPM carries out biodiversity studies across its 35 conservation areas in Uruguay, which cover over 70,000 hectares of land. These areas have specific management plans that have been designed based on the focal objects of conservation in each of them. 🕷️ In 2022, a group of researchers and students from Universidad de la República Uruguay (UDELAR) conducted the first study of spiders in the Esteros y Algarrobales del Río Uruguay conservation area in western Uruguay. 🌟 Spotlight on: UPM Forestal Oriental    The opening of UPM’s Paso de los Toros pulp mill had a major impact on our eucalyptus plantation operations company UPM Forestal Oriental as the wood supplier of our plants in Uruguay. 🪵    A new pulp mill naturally increases the need for raw materials and deliveries between our plantations and pulp mills. Last year, 700 trucks on average arrived daily at the UPM Fray Bentos and UPM Paso de los Toros pulp mills. 🚛    UPM Forestal Oriental hires transportation companies that use both semi-trailer trucks and tri-trains. 🌟 Spotlight on: UPM Forestal Oriental    With the new eucalyptus seedling nursery opened in Sarandi del Yí in February 2023, UPM now has three tree nurseries in Uruguay for cultivating eucalyptus plants of superior quality. Altogether, they yield more than 40 million plants a year that are then planted in the 320,000 hectares of plantable land managed by UPM Forestal Oriental. 🌱    The Sarandi del Yí nursery created over 120 permanent jobs in the area and about 200 rotating jobs in the construction and assembly phase. On a continuous journey to reduce their carbon footprints, our customers are increasingly interested in how we at UPM Pulp handle and monitor our environmental impacts, and how our products contribute to this goal. 🌍 UPM Pulp utilises the ‘Life Cycle Assessment’ (LCA) tool, which involves evaluating environmental impacts with realistic data from every step, starting from tree nurseries, forestry, harvesting, and transport to the mill, to chemicals production and transport, energy consumption and production, and all stages within the pulp mill. ✅ With accurate data from each phase, actions between mills and operations can be compared and improved. 🌟 Spotlight on: UPM Forestal Oriental In October 2023, as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and local community engagement, UPM Forestal Oriental opened the doors to a Visitor Centre in the Esteros y Algarrobales del Río Uruguay Reserve Area. This unique centre, located within a biodiversity hotspot now part of the System of National Protected Areas (SNAP), is designed to host groups interested in exploring and learning about the area’s natural wonders. The Visitor Centre features comprehensive research facilities and two 3km trails that showcase over 900 species of flora and fauna. This initiative is part of a broader effort to manage 35 conservation areas across Uruguay, fostering a unique heritage of biodiversity and conservation.
