About us

UPM is a responsible pulp producer and one of the world’s leading pulp suppliers. We offer a comprehensive set of hardwood and softwood pulp grades for demanding tissue, specialty paper, board, printing and writing paper and other innovative end-uses to the global market.   Our reliability as a pulp supplier is based on our modern and efficient mills, dynamic sales force, local technical support and service, and long-term logistics partners.   We operate five modern pulp mills, three in Finland and two in Uruguay as well as sustainable eucalyptus plantations in Uruguay. Our new Paso de los Toros pulp mill in Uruguay started operations in April 2023. With the new pulp mill, our annual production capacity has increased by over 50% from 3.7 to 5.8 million tonnes.   Our modern pulp mills are also an invaluable source of wood-based, renewable energy as well as by-products and residues, which are used for innovative bio-products.

Tomorrow will be the opening ceremony of the #olympics in Paris. An opportunity to celebrate excellence in sports... but also in wood construction! Indeed, this edition was marked by a conscious choice to build new Olympic venues with timber 🌲🌳 From the accommodation in the Olympic village to the Aquatics center, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opted for flexible, low-carbon wooden structures. Even the beds for the athletes are made with carton! So join us in celebrating this incredible milestone, both for sports, and for the forest-based industry! #Greensource eugreensource.org Cepi Pro Carton - The association of carton and cartonboard manufacturers, The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment, European Pulp Industry Sector AISBL & EOS

In Finland the forest industry used to be concentrated along rivers as the waterways could be used to transport wood to production plants, at the same time as the river provided energy needed by the industry. Still today log driving is a cost-effective form of wood transport which significantly reduces transport emissions. Log driving also reduces the amount of land storage space needed for the mill, as wood can be stored on the water until processing. A floating ferry can be more than one kilometre long and carry up to 30,000 cubic metres of wood at a time. Even though the activity has clearly increased in recent years to nearly a million cubic metres annually it’s far from the peak of the early days when up to 20 million cubic metres of wood were floated in Finland. In this video you see log driving to UPM Kaukas mill site in Lappeenranta. #FibresForTheFuture #Biofore #sustainability #upmpulp #upmkaukas

❄ Frozen Eucalyptus ❄ might sound like a refreshing drink 🍸 on a hot summer day for someone experiencing the current heat wave in Europe. ☀ But in this picture there are frozen eucalyptus seedlings in UPM’s Sarandí del Yi tree nursery in Uruguay where the country – in the middle of winter season – has experienced widespread frost in the past few days. ❄ It might come as a surprise that these eucalyptus seedlings have been frozen on purpose to protect the plants from frost and freezing temperatures. Although it may seem contradictory, that layer of ice is generated by the preventive watering done in the nurseries. ❄ How does this work? The seedlings are irrigated before the frosty weather occurs. The water releases energy as it freezes, which basically translates as heat 🌡. This little bit of heat is enough to keep the plants at a temperature close to 0 C and the ice that forms acts as a protective barrier. ❄ Although the sight of this ice makes us feel cold, the reality is that plants covered by this layer are less exposed to extreme cold in their environment, which prevents freezing damage to plant tissues. For our team in Uruguay -5 C degrees is not an issue!💪 This is the result of a great team working with dedication, ensuring that the next planting season will be successful. UPM’s Nursery Supervisor, Enzo Fioravanzo Siri, captured this moment that reflects the work of a whole team. #FibresfortheFuture #upmeuca

Climate goals, regulation and consumer demand are pushing businesses to lower their carbon footprints. At UPM Pulp we are dedicated to helping our customers achieve these targets with our initiatives. Here are just three ways we're making a difference: • Energy efficient facilities: Our pulp mills in Finland and Uruguay are designed for energy efficiency. Modern pulp mills are significant power plants that generate plenty of surplus energy when producing pulp. Some of the electricity is used in the mill’s internal production process and the remainder is sold to the market. • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): By evaluating every step from raw material sourcing to pulp production, we identify key areas to minimise environmental impact. • Real data for real improvements: We use primary data from our operations and suppliers to pinpoint and address hot spots in the production process. Read the full article and see how we’re helping UPM customers achieve their carbon reduction targets. https://lnkd.in/d92d6Jki #Fibresforthefuture #Carbonfootprint #LifeCycleAssessment #Pulp

Our Uruguay team got nostalgic and shared with us this video that gives us a ride to the early days of the Fray Bentos pulp mill. There are many familiar faces who are still today part of the UPM Uruguay team. 😍 UPM Uruguay’s Senior Manager of Maintenance and Engineering, Bruno Vuan, has experienced the amazing development of the Uruguayan forest industry and the operations which are today known as UPM Uruguay. Read his story to find out what has made it possible for him to maintain the same enthusiasm he had on day one still after almost 20 years. https://lnkd.in/d3EubBKw #Fibresforthefuture #UPMUruguay #UPMFrayBentos #UPMPasodelosToros

In 2022 UPM took seven new vessels into operation in our European routes expecting significant emission reductions. These vessels are equipped with dual fuel engines, meaning that they can run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and traditional marine gas oil. Read how these vessels have performed during the first year in operations. #UPM #BeyondFossils #logistics
