Climate goals, regulation and consumer demand are pushing businesses to lower their carbon footprints. At UPM Pulp we are dedicated to helping our customers achieve these targets with our initiatives. Here are just three ways we're making a difference: • Energy efficient facilities: Our pulp mills in Finland and Uruguay are designed for energy efficiency. Modern pulp mills are significant power plants that generate plenty of surplus energy when producing pulp. Some of the electricity is used in the mill’s internal production process and the remainder is sold to the market. • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): By evaluating every step from raw material sourcing to pulp production, we identify key areas to minimise environmental impact. • Real data for real improvements: We use primary data from our operations and suppliers to pinpoint and address hot spots in the production process. Our Uruguay team got nostalgic and shared with us this video that gives us a ride to the early days of the Fray Bentos pulp mill. In 2022 UPM took seven new vessels into operation in our European routes expecting significant emission reductions. These vessels are equipped with dual fuel engines, meaning that they can run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and traditional marine gas oil. Maintenance shutdowns at pulp mills are big, carefully planned projects involving a huge number of people from both UPM’s own staff and contractor companies. At UPM maintenance shuts take place every 18 months to two years which means that planning of the next project begins immediately after the completion of a maintenance shutdown.   Our Pietarsaari pulp mill recently restarted operations after their maintenance shutdown and here’s the recap:   - More than 1,400 people were working at the mill site for roughly two weeks - Safety performance was at a fairly good level thanks to active recording of safety observations and improved usage of personal protection equipment. However, two lost time accidents were recorded but without any serious implications. - The Finnish spring created challenging weather conditions with ice cold winds and even snow  - The biggest and most demanding of altogether over 3,400 tasks completed was the revamp of the turbine.   Well done and a big thank you to all involved!   #FibresfortheFuture #upmpietarsaari #pulp

Happy International Dinosaur Day!    🦖Have you heard of the Uruguayan dinosaur? About 20 years ago, a Uruguayan botanist named Dr. Eduardo Marchesi found the fossils of a world-first fully Uruguayan Titanosaurus (a large herbivorous dinosaur). As the species was brand new, it was given a name: Udelartitan celeste. This massive 15-metre-long dinosaur lived on the site over 80 million years ago. 🇺🇾The fossils were found on a UPM site that was declared a conservation area, so protection measures were taken, including the safeguarding of all the remaining material.    "Nineteen years after that first find, the site is still listed as a conservation area for UPM because we seek to preserve and protect the site for future paleontological research. At UPM, we are proud to be guardians of this impressive site. This discovery reminds us of the importance of preserving and protecting the country's natural and archaeological heritage." says Iván Grela, UPM's Biodiversity Coordinator.    Udelartitan celeste is the first entirely Uruguayan titanosaur, marking a groundbreaking discovery and a significant milestone in Uruguayan paleontology.      #UPMPulp #paleontology #udelartitanceleste #Titanosaurus
