SPARK Finland
Biotechnology Research
Turning good ideas to great solutions to benefit patients and society
About us
SPARK Finland program is designed to increase the maturity of academic and clinical discoveries towards practical and value-creating solutions in the health tech and life science space. Program supports also career development by educating scientists, students and clinicians on drug and health tech discovery and development, and building the understanding of business aspects related to the discoveries. We work in close relationship with innovation and technology transfer offices of universities, research institutions and hospitals. Our program has been exceptionally successful in boosting the emergence of new products, businesses and licensing deals from academic and clinical institutions. On March 2021 we were acknowledged by Labiotech.eu (currently Shifted - the leading digital media in this space) as TOP25 biotech incubators in Europe. SPARK Finland was built on same principles as SPARK at Stanford. Stanford program was established by Professor Daria Mochly-Rosen in 2006 for advancing new biomedical research discoveries into promising new treatments for patients. It provides top-notch mentoring and education, and a cost-effective model to generate proof of concept by using industry standards.

Reflecting on a great and activity-packed week in Silicon Valley with SPARK Finland and SPARK Norway. 💊 We kicked off with the Stanford Drug Discovery Symposium, skillfully organized by Joseph C. Wu and the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute team. It was again an honor for SPARK Finland and SPARK Norway to be Silver Sponsors for this esteemed event. The symposium provided invaluable insights into the latest trends ('what is hot and what is not') shaping the pharma and biotech industry, offering unparalleled networking opportunities. 💡 Our journey continued with insightful visits to the ecosystems of Stanford University, UCSF Innovation Ventures and University of California, Berkeley accompanied by engaging discussions with industry professionals. 🤝 This week reiterated the significance of face-to-face interactions in nurturing connections, fostering partnerships, and laying the groundwork for future collaborations. We are very proud of our excellent SPARK Finland and SPARK Norway project teams and alumni companies who participated to this journey! You guys rock 💪

The final round of the Tahko Ski Lift Pitch startup event is happening today in the ski lifts of Tahko. Contestants have the duration of a single ski lift ride to deliver their pitch, and the winner will receive a €10,000 main prize for their business idea. From the initial pitching rounds, six out of eight teams representing expertise and research from the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) have advanced to today’s finals. Additionally, all four teams from the university’s Spark Finland network have made it to the finals: CorFlux: Analyzing the risk of aortic rupture. Otos (Aalto University): Developing fast and affordable hearing tests. Surgerix: Aiming for more precise and efficient microsurgery. Im.Engine (Tampere University): deleloping compact lensless phase microscope that eliminates the need for sample preparation. SPARK Finland is a globally connected program that supports the development of health technology and life sciences. It facilitates the commercialization of ideas stemming from research and service production, enhances the skills of researchers and clinicians, and diversifies career opportunities. Still an exciting day ahead on the sunny slopes of Tahko! Tahko ski lift pitch -startup -tapahtuman finaali kisataan tänään Tahkon hiihtohisseissä. Aikaa pitchille on yhden hiihtohissimatkan verran ja voittaja kuittaa bisnesidealleen 10 000 euron pääpalkinnon. Ensimmäisestä pitchauskierroksesta tämän päivän finaaliin selviytyivät UEFin osaamista ja tutkimusta edustavista kahdeksasta tiimistä kuusi. Lisäksi finaaliin selviytyivät kaikki neljä yliopiston SPARK Finland -verkoston tiimeistä, eli aortan repeämisen riskiä analysoiva CorFlux, nopeaa ja edullista kuulontutkimusta kehittävä Otos (Aalto University), tarkempaan ja tehokkaampaan mikrokirurgiaan pyrkivä Surgerix sekä kompaktia, linssitöntä mikroskooppia kehittävä Im.Engine (Tampere University). SPARK Finland on globaalisti verkottunut, terveysteknologia ja life science -alan kehittymistä tukeva ohjelma.
