As we continue to grow in the UK market and dig deeper into the challenges faced by British mothers, maternal mental health is one that deserves our attention. 📪 UK mums are facing dire obstacles in accessing the care they desperately need; no surprise then that the situation is being called an ´absolute scandal´ and ´post-code lottery´ at government level. 🤰It is a shocking statistic that one in four mothers develop a mental health problem as a result of pregnancy or childbirth, for example, because of traumatic birth or losing her baby. 🤦♀️These include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. Many factors make women more vulnerable to mental illness during this period, from changes in hormone levels and the brain, physical and psychological stress and traumas during birth, to the sheer magnitude of this life event. ❗Yet at the same time almost 20,000 women a year living with mental health problems triggered by being pregnant or giving birth are being denied support by the NHS in the UK. 💰Maternal mental ill health is estimated to cost the NHS £1.2bn a year and society as a whole £8.1bn. Much of the NHS’s £1.2bn bill is care for children whose mothers struggled to form a close bond with them because of their maternity-related mental ill health. 🫶 While we at Lola&Lykke cannot provide professional mental health services, what we can offer is personalized support, solidarity and a better sense of preparedness. As we expand and grow our community in the UK, it is our hope that each UK mum can benefit from our evidence-based content, free maternal health advice and our honest peer-to-peer support. Being connected to a community, especially a community that is focused more on witnessing each other as people, rather than exclusively and intensively focusing on our children, will give us mothers a greater sense of solidarity.
