In our recent nationwide registry study, FINASTHMA, we showed that asthma patients using high doses of oral corticosteroids have a high burden of comorbidities, especially pneumonia. That is a novel finding in patients with asthma. Several Finnish media, including Helsingin Sanomat, Iltasanomat, and MTV Oy, are now reporting these findings. The summer picnic is a cherished tradition at MedEngine. This year, we decided to add some exciting activities—kayaking, biking, and stand-up paddling. And oh, how much fun it was! Psoriasis vulgaris is associated with a significant healthcare burden, which increases over time as the disease progresses. The aim of our latest retrospective, population-based, registry study was to characterize healthcare resource utilization (#HCRU) in patients with psoriasis using biologics and oral immunosuppressants (conventionals) in #Finland. 💡 Highlights: ⚫ The results indicated a remarkable decrease in contacts with a dermatologist after the treatment initiation among patients starting biological treatment ⚫ Before starting a biologic, psoriasis patients had a mean number of 5.4 dermatology contacts per year, while after starting a biologic, the mean number of annual dermatology contacts decreased to 2.3. ⚫ Conversely, the mean number of annual dermatology contacts remained similar before and after the initiation of a conventional treatment (3.3 and 3.2 contacts per year, respectively). ⚫ For the starters of conventional treatments, there was a high level of contacts with a dermatologist surrounding times of treatment switching, which was not observed for biologic starters. 💎 Conclusion Overall, primary and other secondary care contacts did not decrease after the initiation or switch of treatment. The European vision for Real-World Evidence in drug approval processes and COVID-19-experiences During the #COVID-19 pandemic, Real-World Evidence (#RWE) was crucial for #EU regulators to assess the safety and efficacy of drugs and vaccines, with six RWE studies supporting COVID-19 vaccine benefits. In 2025 and beyond, EU regulators aim to incorporate RWE more broadly in medicine development, authorization, and supervision. The Data Analytics and Real World Interrogation Network (DARWIN EU) plays a key role in this vision. The EMA’s recommendations for RWE focus on ensuring access to diverse data sources, speeding up RWE generation, identifying research needs early, and fostering collaboration among decision-makers and stakeholders.
