🔋 Introducing Lion Vision at SWEEEP Kuusakoski, Kent, UK! Batteries pose a significant fire risk in e-waste recycling, especially at our site processing 100 tons daily. Previously, our team manually sorted 18,000 battery cells daily. Now, after 12 months of research and development, a new auto-detection system is in place. "Lion Vision can analyze half a million images in 24 hours, detecting over 600 cylinder batteries per hour," explained Justin Greenaway, Commercial Manager at Sweeep Kuusakoski Ltd. Developed with The University of Manchester, Lion Vision uses advanced machine learning to identify 40 battery subtypes and hazardous objects like vapes. The system provides real-time visualization and reporting, enhancing data-driven decisions. Auto-eject capability is our next goal! 🎯 Excited about the future of e-waste recycling with Lion Vision! Did you know that our copper center at Heinola, Finland produces enough copper in a week for 500 electric cars? 🚗 The copper centre that has been operating since spring of 2023, has the processing ability of approximately 2.5 tonnes per hour, resulting in 40 tonnes of recycled copper a week. The advanced technology enables efficient extraction of copper from cables, radiators, transformers, and other copper-containing fractions. In 2023, a record-breaking 14 million electric cars were sold globally, with even higher sales projected for 2024. Given the soaring global demand for copper and the environmental impact of mining new ore, which generates ten times more CO₂ emissions than recycling, we are firm believers that recycling is the sustainable path forward! 🌱 Find out more from the link in the comments. 💡 #Kuusakoski #KuusakoskiRecycling #CopperRecycling #ElectricVehicles #Recycling

Kuusakoski had a fantastic time at the E-Waste World Conference & Expo in Frankfurt, Germany! ♻️ This leading European event for electronics recycling featured over 200 exhibitors and attracted more than 3,000 attendees. As strong advocates of recycling and reuse, we were proud to be not just one of the exhibitors but also a silver sponsor. 🩶 Our smart battery sensor, developed together with Olfactomics and DOLAV Plastic Products, generated a lot of interest. The largest risk for companies handling lithium-ion batteries is fire, which also leads to high insurance costs. This new patented (pending) proactive risk management measure helps reduce this risk. The battery sensor identifies gases originating from the liquid electrolyte inside the batteries and sends an SMS alarm to take action before a fire breaks out. In addition, the wheel of sustainability in our booth served food for thought as intended. Visitors had the opportunity to spin the wheel and answer questions with a sustainability twist related to ITAD, batteries, e-waste, and metals. For correct answers, we gave out prizes from fellow Finnish brands such as IITTALA, Fazer, Lumene Group, and Riipisen Riistaherkut, showcasing classic quality products from our home country. A huge thank you to Hendrik Vedder, Tapio Kuusakoski, and Ben László for representing Kuusakoski, and kudos to everyone who visited and made this event memorable! 💡 For more information about our e-waste solutions, visit the link in the comments. #KuusakoskiRecycling #Kuusakoski #EWasteWorld2024 #Recycling #Sustainability #EWaste

Yesterday, sustainability leaders Tuomas Haikka from Kuusakoski, Kati Ihamäki from Fiskars Group, and Petri Mure from Outokumpu discussed the importance of credible information on product lifecycles and circularity for making sustainable choices. 💡 Fun fact! These companies are united in a powerful recycling loop: Fiskars, renowned for iconic design and household brands like the legendary Fiskars scissors, is a long-standing Finnish manufacturing company. Outokumpu, a global stainless steel company, produces industry-leading recycled content products, reaching up to 98%. Kuusakoski is proud to be the metals recycling partner for both these great companies, creating a highly efficient recycling loop. We supply recycled material to Outokumpu, which then produces recycled stainless steel products for Fiskars, and we recycle Fiskars’ leftover materials from production. Key takeaways from the discussion: 🌱 Ensure end-of-life products enter the recycling system. Efficiency means little if items like mobile phones stay in drawers. ♻️ Develop and optimize recycling technologies for complex products. New items, such as cars, should be designed for recycling from the start. 💶 Consider lifecycle costs of products, not just the purchase price. Reliable, comparable information is essential, and Kuusakoski offers externally verified lifecycle calculations to help businesses with that. Insightful conversations like these guide us toward a more sustainable future, one step at a time! Thank you to the panelists, Kirsi Alm-Siira for hosting, and everyone who attended! We are proud to share that Kuusakoski's reuse and data destruction services are now ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified by Bureau Veritas Group in Finland and Sweden! ✅ "We are very happy to have achieved the ISO27001 certification, which validates our commitment and ability to protect our customers’ data throughout the reuse and destruction process. We already had many things in place before certifying our processes, which facilitated this project nicely. Now everything is arranged according to the ISO management system and we can keep on continuously improving the processes in a structured manner. This accomplishment is another token of hard work and dedication from our team and reinforces our promise to deliver operational excellence and provide high-quality services," says Tapio Kuusakoski, WEEE Business Director. The certification process involved a comprehensive assessment of the entire end-of-life chain, including secure transport, material destruction, data erasure, device refurbishment, and preparation for reuse at our sites in Lahti and Kivikko, Finland, and Skogås, Stockholm, Sweden. 🔒 Ensure your data's security with Kuusakoski's trusted and certified solutions. Is all aluminium equal? Well, in terms of environmental impact, no! We can differentiate four types of aluminium based on the average carbon footprint: 🟤 Brown aluminium - produced from bauxite with fossil fuels ⚫ Grey aluminium - produced from certified bauxite with fossil energy 🟢 Green aluminium - produced partly from recycled raw materials, partly with renewable energy 💚 Truly green aluminium - produced from recycled raw materials with renewable energy Always prefer sustainably recycled materials because producing aluminium from recycled materials requires 95% less energy compared to primary aluminium. Another bonus is that you can recycle aluminium indefinitely while retaining the quality, so newer is not always better! #Kuusakoski #KuusakoskiRecycling #Aluminium #Recycling #Sustainability

Last month, Ben László, Business Development Manager at Kuusakoski Sweden, made us proud by speaking at #BIRCopenhagen2024, a conference organized by the Bureau of International Recycling. The event featured many insightful presentations, and it was great to meet new and existing business partners, as well as discover a wide variety of cutting-edge technology on display. 👏 Ben shared insights as part of the electrics, electronics, and EV batteries committee, showcasing end-to-end solutions for the circular economy and highlighting the role of technological advancements in optimizing the recycling process. ♻️ 📍 By the way, last year a new site specialising in ITAD services opened at Länna Park south of Stockholm in Sweden. The site processes end-of-life IT equipment and provides environmentally friendly data destruction capabilities. 💻 If you'd like more information about IT asset disposition (ITAD) and electronics recycling, then contact Ben or discover more via the link in the comments! #Kuusakoski #KuusakoskiRecycling #ElectronicsRecycling #CircularEconomy #Sustainability
