Interesting and efficient week in Brussels. The celebration of Elinkeinoelämän keskusliitto EK – Confederation of Finnish Industries EU office’s 50 years anniversary was a great opportunity to meet and discuss with fellow EU geeks 🇪🇺. It was a pleasure to chat with Finland’s Commissioner-Designate Henna Virkkunen and her crucial role in making Europe more competitive. I also joined a panel with former Finnish Prime Minister and Commissioner Jyrki Katainen and President of BusinessEurope Fredrik Persson, brilliantly moderated by journalist, former MEP Nils Torvalds. We discussed - yes, you guessed it - about Europe’s competitiveness and productivity. I wanted to add another element: accountability. We have seen so many papers and plans, but too little action. Before new money is added to jointly finance what Europe needs, it would be good to see some concrete actions that would reduce e.g. obstacles to Single Market or the administrative and reporting burden for businesses. My list of areas where joint action is needed is below. It’s almost the same as highlighted in the Draghi report and also by former Commissioner Erkki Liikanen who gave an excellent keynote at the event: 1. Single Market 2.0 -stringent implementation of the core, stepping back from the non-core. 2. More emphasis on economic and physical security, reducing unhealthy dependencies. 3. Innovation in close collaboration companies. 4. Continue the work on green and digital transition. This would to some extent require a renewal of the European governance model. And as any EU geek knows, that’s a piece of cake 😉. Happy Friday everyone!

Customer Story: Markin Tubing, a leading small-diameter tubing manufacturer, operates eight steel tube mills offering a complete range of carbon-steel tubing. Their production process relies heavily on process-critical cranes. After experiencing frequent hoist breakdowns, Markin partnered with Konecranes for quarterly proactive maintenance inspections. This decision has eliminated breakdowns entirely, ensuring uninterrupted production and worker safety. Three years later, breakdowns are a thing of the past at Markin Tubing. According to Purchasing Manager Ivan Zahariev, the company has gone from five-10 instances a year where a line was shut down due to crane failure, to none. “We entered into this relationship with Konecranes to save money by eliminating breakdowns and to guarantee our customer’s delivery dates would be met. But in terms of value, you can’t put a price on worker safety. That’s where this program has really paid off for us,” Ivan Zahariev says. [NEWS] Konecranes is adjusting its operating model to support its strategy deployment and growth ambitions. As of January 1, 2025, our business will be comprised of three Business Areas – Industrial Service, Industrial Equipment and Port Solutions – versus the current two, Industrial Service and Equipment and Port Solutions. The new operational model aims at enhancing growth, accelerating efficiency and continued profitability improvement. “For over two years, we have successfully managed the Industrial Service and Equipment Business Area as one unified entity. This has allowed us to effectively simplify our Industrial go-to-market model and harmonize our product offering, and we feel that we have largely reached the benefits we were seeking when combining the businesses. As we expect our business to grow, we want to ensure that we have the right operating model in place to support our growth ambitions especially in Industrial Service. Despite the change, our common frontlines and customer focus will remain steadfast. I am confident that this change will accelerate our decision-making and position us better to achieve our long-term ambitions,” says Anders Svensson, President and CEO of Konecranes. As part of this development, Fabio Fiorino is appointed as Business Area President, Industrial Service, as of January 1, 2025. Until then he continues in his current role as the Executive Vice President Industrial Service and Equipment, and as a member of the Konecranes Leadership Team. Marko Tulokas is appointed as Business Area President, Industrial Equipment, and a member of the Konecranes Leadership Team as of January 1, 2025. Until then he continues in his current role as Senior Vice President, Business Unit Standard Equipment. And Tomas Myntti has been appointed as Business Area President, Port Solutions, and joins the Konecranes Leadership Team starting October 14, 2024. Tomas joined Konecranes in 2008 and has held various leadership positions in both the service and equipment businesses. He replaces Juha Pankakoski, who will leave Konecranes as announced earlier. Last week Konecranes celebrated its new-design of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carrier at the straddle carrier facility in Würzburg, Germany. The prototype was displayed for customers, presenting an opportunity for the visitors to view and discuss the exciting new possibilities it offers. Sustainability was a big theme at the event as the new-design offers customers zero tailpipe emission operation thanks to its complete set of power options. In addition to this, hybrid and battery operation are also available, with a hydrogen operation as a step to be taken in the future, if hydrogen infrastructure develops as expected. The heritage of Konecranes Noell and straddle carriers dates back to 1968. The straddle carrier is a versatile container handling machine and over 3,800 of these have been delivered to container terminals all over the world.
