For a common sustainable future – Innovative environmental auditing
About us
The INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) is a large, volunteer organization focusing on environmental auditing. The INTOSAI WGEA was formed in 1992, at the time of the Rio Earth Summit on sustainable development. WGEA began as a small group of 12 countries, but it has grown to be the largest INTOSAI working group with 86 SAIs, which exchange information and experiences with their peers. Moreover, six of the seven INTOSAI regions – AFROSAI, ARABOSAI, ASOSAI, EUROSAI, OLACEFS and PASAI, have established regional working groups or committees on environmental auditing (RWGEA) to support practice sharing and to undertake collaborative audits within regions., Our key goals include increasing the expertise in environmental auditing globally, and enhancing environmental governance with high-quality contribution and visibility. In the past, we have published several products, including Guidance, Training and Research Papers, which have dealt with topics related to environment – such as water, waste, sustainable development, biodiversity, climate and energy. All the publications can be viewed and downloaded on our website. INTOSAI WGEA aims to improve the use of audit mandate and audit instruments in the field of environmental protection policies, by both members of the Working Group and non-member Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs). Joint auditing by SAIs of cross border environmental issues and policies, and the audit of international environmental accords, has the Working Group's special attention.

Today concluded both batches of the INTOSAI DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (IDI)'s SAI Innovations Framing Webinar on Innovating Climate Action. Sharing innovative audit examples yesterday in the first batch of the webinar were the Office of the Auditor General of Canada / Bureau du vérificateur général du Canada, SAI Chile and US Government Accountability Office. The examples showed that SAIs can benefit from systematic approaches, cooperative projects and foresight. In the second batch of the webinar, Peter Welch reviewed the challenges and opportunities in government climate adaptation action, while Mohamed Ibrahim Jaleel from Auditor General's Office, Maldives shed light on environmental challenges and innovations from a small island nation perspective. INTOSAI WGEA's Secretary-General Vivi Niemenmaa briefed the attendees on the work of the INTOSAI WGEA, and gave a sneak peek into the 11th INTOSAI WGEA Survey results, which will be published soon! In the Q&A-portion, speakers discussed the role of territorial and urban planning in tackling climate change. Additionally, by using air pollution and heat waves as examples, Vivi Niemenmaa asked why the health sector is not more active in the climate discussion and urged for policy coherence.
