International early-stage venture capital investor Antler has closed its fund for the second time. The fund’s focus is on the Nordic countries and early-stage technology companies. “The new Nordic fund of Antler has a significant focus on Finland. In addition, the manager’s operating model is unique and develops and diversifies the local startup ecosystem. As Antler also actively advances sustainability in its portfolio, we are pleased to be able to bring a new player to the Finnish venture capital market,” explains Enni Rautio, Investment Director at Tesi’s fund investments team. ICYMI: Finnish venture capital and private equity funds generate good returns, compared to both listed market and European counterparts. This is now the second comparison of returns from Finnish VC&PE funds to those from the listed market, and the results still look good: the returns from 75% of the funds of 2009–2020 vintage exceed the returns generated by the listed market. The top quartile of the funds generated returns 2.5 times higher than the listed market. Venture capital funds investing in startups have excelled: Finnish funds raised after the financial crisis (2009–2015) achieved annual percentage returns of 20%. In terms of their returns, over one-half of these funds are positioned in the top quartile compared to their European peers. “An interesting feature is that newer buyout and growth funds boosted their annual percentage returns by two percentage points compared to the previous year. Given the prevailing economic challenges, that’s very positive news,” comments Arttu Suominen, Tesi's Investment Associate who compiled the survey. Read more:

Suomessa on kasvava joukko puhtaan siirtymän kasvuyrityksiä. Tuoreen selvityksemme mukaan niiden kasvuluvut näyttävät lupaavilta ja rahoitusta yritysten alkuvaiheeseen on saatavilla hyvin. Myöhemmän kasvun vaihe sen sijaan huolestuttaa: sriippuvuus kansainvälisestä rahoituksesta on suurta. ”Ulkomaiset sijoittajat ovat aiempaa varovaisempia sijoittamaan kotimaidensa ulkopuolelle, ja se aiheuttaa haasteita erityisesti siinä vaiheessa, kun yritys tarvitsee rahoitusta kansainväliseen kasvuun tai esimerkiksi ensimmäisen tuotantolaitoksen käynnistämiseen”, kommentoi Jakob Sandell, selvityksen koonnut tutkimuspäällikkö Tesiltä. ”Suomalaisen sijoittajan mukanaolo myös vahvistaa kotimaista omistajuutta – yritystä ei myydä niin pian ulkomaille, vaan veturiyritykset ja niiden ympärille muodostuvat osaamiskeskittymät jäävät vahvistamaan ja uudistamaan kotimaista elinkeinoelämää”, jatkaa Tesin toimitusjohtaja Pia Santavirta. ICYMI: Want to know more about cleantech in the Nordics? According to the study, it is estimated that the Nordic cleantech market will need a cautious estimate of at least EUR 15 billion in venture capital investments over the next five years to maintain a good growth trajectory. “This estimate does not include massive funding rounds like those of Northvolt and H2 Green Steel, which would further raise the financing need significantly. It is clear, however, that if we want to attract billion-euro industrial projects to the Nordics, sufficient funding must be found for them both locally and internationally,” comments Jakob Sandell, Research Manager at Tesi, who oversaw compiling the study.
