🚀 It’s been a year since we got started as a formal project supported by Aalto University and #BusinessFinland with the aim of further advancing and commercialising our copper-redox battery expertise and technology. Over the past year, this journey has been incredibly exciting as we continue to create more technological development through new electrolytes or manufacturing techniques; adding to our growing list of patentable innovations. When we first began, all we had were some technical drawings, academic papers, and a small 0.5W prototype in the lab. Fast forward to this month and we are building our largest-ever 1000 W demonstrator unit, which is nearly about the maximum physical size we could build in the space we have today. Our ambitions to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and resilient grids through our patented battery technology have increased over time. And that is why over the next few months, we would focus our efforts in establishing as a battery manufacturer based in Finland, supplying the hardware to partners and integrators for commercial, industrial, and utility-grid installations. ⚡ The batteries are able to store charge/discharge cycles of 4 to 12 hours, thus absorbing the peak over-production of energy and creating arbitrage opportunities that will be increasingly-common as more grids shift to intermittent renewables. With the assembly and components based upon non-critical materials and highly lean production techniques, our lifetime cost over 20 years is cost-competitive with even the most established battery manufacturers on the market. We are now seeking potential funding partners, but also for pilot adoption use cases based in Finland and Nordics/Baltics. Do reach out to us to find out more, and let’s work together to build a decarbonised and sustainable future ahead 😊   #deeptech #finland #batterystorage #flowbatteries #renewables

We at CuRen are honoured to be recognised by IFBF - International Flow Battery Forum for our work on copper redox flow batteries. It's been a great experience for us and much kudos to Sakari for the great effort! Copper RFBs enable longer duration storage (of up to 12 hours) than what currently exists on the energy storage market. Designed with cost-efficiency, sustainable, and highly scalable manufacturing principles, we accelerate the adoption and transition towards renewable energy, for grid-scale and industrial users. Looking forward to creating more innovations and progress in building larger battery systems, as we prepare to spinoff the university this year. 📝 Meet the Winners of our Poster Session at the Spinoff Summit 2024 👏 ℹ️ The poster session was a key highlight. Around 20 participants presented their research or science-based businesses, engaged with attendees, and received votes for their visionary projects. Who won? 🔎 Here’s a closer look at our three winners with a tie for second place: 🥇 Sakari Syväniemi and Wouter Dirk Badenhorst - CuRen 🥇 Sakari and Wouter are PhD researchers in Chemical Engineering at Aalto University. They are currently working on CuRen, a project that aims to revolutionize energy storage through its copper-redox flow batteries. These batteries offer scalable power and capacity, high cycling life, and cost-efficient manufacturing. Aiming at the €53bn European energy market, CuRen is preparing for a spinoff and a seed funding round in Nov 2024, with plans to start manufacturing in 2025. Prize: Tickets to the Falling Walls Conference 🥈 Maike Kaufman, Claudio Michaelis, and Wieland Brendel - polybot 🥈 Maike, Claudio, and Wieland are a group of current and former researchers from Baden-Württemberg with stints at the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS), the University of Oxford, or Amazon. They aim to revolutionize sustainable farming with small, autonomous-legged robots called polybots. These robots can replace large machinery in monoculture farming, handling tasks like seeding, planting, weeding, and harvesting. This innovation paves the way for new sustainable farming practices. Prize: Three essential startup books: 📚 The Hard Thing About Hard Things, 📚Venture Deals, and 📚 Innovator's DNA. 🥈 Timo Eckstein - Large-scale simulations of Floquet physics on near-term quantum computers 🥈 Timo Eckstein, who handed over the poster representing a group of researchers, is a PhD student at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and studies quantum assembler algorithms to explore the advantages of quantum algorithms over classical ones. His work introduces the QHiFFS algorithm for simulating the dynamics of fast-driven Floquet systems on quantum hardware. This approach shows significant advantages in simulation time and frequency scaling compared to traditional methods. The algorithm leverages a kick operator to transform the system into a basis governed by a time-independent effective Hamiltonian, allowing for efficient simulation of Floquet systems. Prize: Three essential startup books: 📚 The Hard Thing About Hard Things, 📚Venture Deals, and 📚 Innovator's DNA. 🙌 A big thank you to everyone who participated in the poster session and all attendees who placed their dots. Special shoutout to the Falling Walls Foundation for sponsoring the first prize. Wanna join the Spinoff Summit in 2025? Pre-register here: 2ly.link/1ydWw #SpinoffSummit2024 #DeepTech #FirstMomentum

At CuRen, we're starting off this month with a bang, diving into the fascinating world of renewable energy! 💡 Today, we're shedding light on a crucial topic: long-duration energy storage (LDES) and why it is indispensable in the renewable energy landscape. As countries like Ireland, Denmark, and Spain surge ahead with over 30% of their energy coming from wind & solar alone, it's a milestone worth celebrating. However, challenges remain on the horizon, particularly concerning energy security and sustainability. The variability of renewable energy supply and mismatch between electricity generation and demand can create stresses on existing power generation, transmission and distribution assets, leading to greater system instability. By storing and releasing excess energy, LDES enables us to maximize the potential of intermittent energy sources, accelerating the much-needed decarbonization of our electric grid. According to Cleantech Group, once a country's wind or solar penetration surpasses 50%, LDES of over 10 hours becomes essential to serve as a reliable backup for renewable generation. But these solutions must be both cost-effective and long-term to support sustained decarbonisation efforts effectively. Stay tuned for our next post, where we'll delve into the diverse types of LDES available today and in the near future. 🌍 #LDES #renewables #decarbonisation #energygrid #climatetech

It's time we wind down for the year and take a well-deserved break for the holidays! Since we started 6 months ago, we have made incredible progress: building a functioning multistack battery system in our lab, conducting customer and market studies, and exhibiting at both NORDEEP Summit and Slush. The highlight of the year would definitely be Slush. It is such a wonderful experience meeting with over a dozen investors, learning from industry experts, and having countless people come by our booth to learn how our copper batteries can enable the acceleration of renewable energy, in Europe and beyond. 2024 will be a busy year ahead as we look towards small-scale pilots with industry stakeholders and seek to raise our first funding round. We would love to connect with #climatetech / #deeptech / #impact focused VCs, and renewable energy developers and asset owners. To learn more about what we do and who we are, drop us a message or follow us on linkedin. See you next year, and wishing everyone a happy holidays ahead ☃ 🎇 Hyvää Joulua! #copper #redoxflowbattery #finland #aaltouniversity Paul Wong Wouter Dirk Badenhorst
