As the keynote speaker for the plenary session, Mr. Maalel engaged in high-level discussions on the theme "Research and Technological Development for Economic Transformation." One of the main goals of his presentation was to highlight the EURAXESS network, which serves as an invaluable resource for researchers and entrepreneurs. 🇪🇺 🇳🇬 Panel discussion #NigeriaEU #InnovationDays in Lagos, Nigeria ✅The panel discussion focused on EU-Nigeria ongoing successful R&D projects. ✅The session was moderated by Dr. Laurent Bochereau, the Minister-Counsellor for STI at the European Delegation to the African Union. ✅The list of panelists include Prof Olusegun Oyebola, University of Ibadan, partner of INCiTiS-FOOD Horizon Europe Project, Prof S. O. Ajadi Suraju Obafemi Awolowo University, Partner of EmbeddedAI, ERASMUS Project, Dr Maruf Sanni, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions NCP Point for Nigeria, National Centre for Technology Management, Dr Margherita Trestini, an entrepreneur and the NCP for SME funding programs under the EU's research initiatives, and Prof sylvanus okogbenin, PI of the INTEGRATE EDCTP project ✅ Prof Olusegun Oyebola discussed the Incitis-Food Horizon Europe Project, which aims to develop circular and sustainable food production systems for African cities. The project combines fish farming, vegetable production, and insect-based feed to establish organic, soil-less urban food production. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and persistence in securing funding for the project. ✅Professor Ajadi Suraju discussed his involvement in a collaborative project on AI, which aims to foster further collaborations between European and Nigerian universities. The project has established a master's degree program in embedded AI in Nigeria and plans to train many students through this capacity-building initiative. He emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the potential for AI to transform various industries. ✅Prof sylvanus okogbenin spoke about an EU-funded Horizon project to develop new clinical trials and treatments for Lassa fever. The project has made significant progress in shaping national and WHO guidelines to improve patient survival, building research capacity and laboratory capabilities within participating institutions, and conducting molecular diagnostics, sequencing, and analyses to identify promising drug candidates. ✅Dr. Sanni shared his experience as a MSCA postdoctoral fellow, highlighting the benefits of the program in building capacity and providing opportunities for networking and collaboration. ✅Dr. Trestini discussed how industry partners, including SMEs from both Europe and Africa, are involved in research and innovation projects in Europe. She involved in two Horizon Europe projects focused on clean agriculture and vocational training programs for small-scale farmers in Africa. 🇪🇺 🇳🇬 EURAXESS Africa participate in the panel discussion #NigeriaEU #InnovationDays #Lagos #Nigeria, 9-10 July ✅The panel discussion focused on EU-Africa innovation funding opportunities. This panel was moderated by Dr Leila Ben Amor Mathieu, Head of Human Development Section #DelegationDelegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS ✅The panelists for this event include Dr. Noel Biodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Mrs. Rakyia Iliazu, Director for University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Yedilfana Setarge Mekonnen, a regional representative to EURAXESS Africa, and Dr. Vincenzo Lorusso, Policy officer at European Union DG-RTD, Horizon Europe & Africa Initiatives. ✅Dr. Yedilfana Setarge Mekonnen, the regional representative to EURAXESS Africa, provided an overview of the EURAXESS Worldwide program, as the world's largest researchers' database with with over 120,000 researchers globally, including more than 15,000 from Africa. The EURAXESS Worldwide network has 9 hubs and 16 team members across the world, outside of Europe, providing free access to information to researchers worldwide about funding, job and networking opportunities in Europe. EURAXESS Africa builds capacity among African researchers, through organizing events focused on providing information and practical training sessions. He also promoted the EURAXESS all-in-one networking and information platform. He mentioned that, EURAXESS Africa is working to empower more African researchers to access and benefit from Horizon Europe programs such as the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and European Research Council (ERC) grants, as well as HE African and Mediterranean initiatives ✅Dr. Noel Biodun Saliu introduced the African Center of Excellence (ACE) program, a regional high education program funded by the World Bank and the French Development Agency. The program focuses on science, technology, engineering, mathematics, health, and agriculture, with a goal to address commodity-related development challenges in West and Central Africa. Highlighted the importance of collaboration between African institutions and international partners to address pressing development challenges. ✅Rakyia Iliazu discussed Erasmus Plus, an EU funding organization that aims to improve the quality and relevance of education and training worldwide. Erasmus Plus provides scholarships for researchers and innovators, as well as capacity building in higher education and research. The program has allocated 570 million Euros for scholarships in sub-Saharan Africa between 2021-2027. ✅Dr. Vincenzo Lorusso wrapped up the discussion by providing an overview of Horizon Europe's goals and objectives. Horizon Europe is a €95.5 billion funding program for research and innovation over seven years. 🎉 🇪🇺 🇳🇬 The first "Nigeria-EU Innovation Days" was successfully held on July 9-10, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, with the aim of promoting innovation and collaboration between Nigeria and the European Union. #NigeriaEU #InnovationDays 💹 Samuela Isopi, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, welcomed attendees to the event, highlighting the importance of innovation and the strong commitment of the EU to support Nigeria's innovative potential. She emphasized that innovation is key to driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving living standards in Nigeria. 💹Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Honorable Minister of Youth Development and Lagos Hon Minister emphasized the critical role of youth in driving Nigeria's development and innovation. She highlighted the government's commitment to STEM education, entrepreneurship, and international collaborations. She called on innovators and entrepreneurs to take advantage of opportunities offered by the EU-Nigeria Innovation Hub. 💹The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, represented by Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency, emphasized the significance of innovation as the engine of economic growth and the partnership between Nigeria and the EU.
