New thermocline concepts for central receiver and parabolic trough CSP plants.

The Newcline project has been conceived with the objective of improving significantly the thermal energy storage in CSP plants. New thermocline concepts will be developed using innovative materials, advanced computational simulation tools and experimentally tested prototypes at both lab-scale and pilot-scale set-ups. Newcline project objectives are the following: • Development of new thermocline concepts that can be applicable to different CSP plants (PT, CR, LF) • Two concepts related to materials are proposed (structured ceramic filler refractories - multi-layered PCM-TCF) • The two concepts will be experimentally tested in a lab-scale set up (fundamental studies) and at relevant pilot-scale of 4 MWh • Detailed simulations of both concepts will be validated with the experimental data generated in this project • Both concepts will be analysed and optimized in terms of system integration and LCOE savings on a CSP system level and up-scaling for CSP target applications The consortium of Newcline project is formed by: • Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) https://www.cttc.upc.edu • Kraftblock https://kraftblock.com/ • German Aerospace Center (DLR) https://www.dlr.de/tt/en/ • Institute for Solar Technology (SPF) https://spf.hsr.ch/ • Empresarios Agrupados https://www.empresariosagrupados.es/?lang=en
