#EU #Wind and solar growth since 2019 cut fossil generation by a fifth! The EU’s strong commitment to the #clean #electricity transition has resulted in a deep transformation of its electricity sector. According to new analysis from think tank Ember, since 2019, EU #wind and solar capacity have grown by 65% ( 188 GW). Wind capacity increased by 31% ( 52 GW) to 219 GW in 2023. This new wind and solar capacity resulted in a 46% ( 226 TWh) combined increase in generation from 2019 to 2023 and propelled wind and solar’s share in the EU electricity mix from 17% in 2019 to over a quarter in 2023 (27%). This was the main driver behind the increase in the share of total renewables from 34% in 2019 to 44% in 2023. More information here: https://lnkd.in/eiDHAxkX

The Inflation Reduction Act (#IRA), signed into law on August 16, 2022, is the largest climate legislation in #US history. Along with fighting inflation and boosting domestic manufacturing, the IRA ultimately aims to help the U.S. achieve its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. This infographic, created by the Visual Capitalist in partnership with the National Public Utilities Council, breaks down the $392.5 billion in clean energy and climate spending in the Inflation Reduction Act, based on estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.

Global #renewable #energy capacity has grown by 415% since 2000, or a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.4%. However, many large and wealthy regions, including the United States and Europe, maintain a lower average annual renewable capacity growth. This chart, created by Visual Capitalist in partnership with the National Public Utilities Council, shows how each world region has contributed to the growth in renewable energy capacity since 2000, using the latest data released from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Can the #transition from fossil fuels to clean, emission-free #electricity sources be accomplished in a financially viable manner? In this graphic, Visual Capitalist seeks answers to that question by visualizing the 2023 levelized costs of electricity of various technologies in the #US, as calculated by Lazard. According to Lazard’s 2023 analysis of unsubsidized LCOE in the U.S., both #onshore #wind and utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies are more cost-effective than combined cycle natural gas power plants. In the case of onshore wind, this has been true since 2015. Levelized cost of electricity (#LCOE) is a metric used to assess the cost of generating electricity from a specific power source over its lifetime. The measure takes into account all of the costs associated with building, operating, and maintaining a power plant, as well as the amount of electricity the plant is expected to produce over its lifetime. LCOE is a comprehensive way to compare the costs of various electricity generation technologies. It’s also worth mentioning, however, that there is a substantial amount of tax subsidies available for clean electricity generation in the U.S., including the $161 billion in clean electricity tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). By leveraging these funding opportunities, the LCOE of renewables, nuclear power and energy storage systems has the potential to fall even further, bolstering their competitive edge in the market.

In 2023, despite the macroeconomic challenges faced by the sector in some key markets, the wind industry installed 10.8 GW of new #offshore #wind capacity, taking the global total to 75.2 GW. New capacity increased 24% on the previous year, a growth rate the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) expects to see continue up to 2030, if the present increase in policy momentum continues. In the next ten years, GWEC forecasts that 410 GW of new offshore wind capacity will be installed, bringing offshore wind deployment in line with global targets to install 380 GW by 2030. The majority of that will come at the turn of the decade, with two-thirds installed between 2029 and 2033. This rapid expansion of deployment must be built on a growing collaboration between industry and government and the creation of streamlined and effective policy and regulatory frameworks.
