The 2023 Uruguay LGBT Pride Connection Summit hosted by Càmara de Comercio Y Negocios LGBT de Uruguay kicked off yesterday and I had the incredible privilege of moderating a panel discussion with two remarkable women and National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) Global affiliate leaders: Diane Rodriguez 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈, president of Cámara LGBT de Comercio & Turismo Ecuador and Ivannova Armas, Social Programs Coordinator of Cámara de Empresas LGBTI Venezuela. Our discussion centered around the critical role of gender diversity in LGBTQIA chambers of commerce leadership. These dynamic leaders shared their insights, experiences, and strategies for fostering inclusive and diverse workspaces. Here are some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Leadership needs to reflect the diverse communities the serve, specially when it comes to organizations aimed to advance economic inclusions of diverse businesses in #venezuela and #ecuador 2️⃣ Visibility Matters: Both leaders emphasized the significance of being role models and supporting the next generation of female leaders from all diverse backgrounds 3️⃣ Inclusion is a Journey: Achieving true inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean takes continuous effort. It's about creating sustainable diverse spaces where everyone feels represented, heard, valued, and empowered. In 2024, 91.2% of Board positions in Australia are held by Anglo-Celts – trending up from 90.5% in 2017. This is not a surprising statistic, although something so glaringly obvious can still make you gasp when put out in the open via a report!   Last week I attended the launch of the 2024 Board Diversity Index Report. An extraordinary piece of work brought together by Watermark Search International in partnership with Governance Institute of Australia. Thank you David Evans for presenting some eye-opening findings.   The launch was MC’d by the remarkable Paul Nicolaou, Director, Business Sydney – the one and only, and included a panel discussion. A very candid and frank discussion by the panel Pauline Vamos, Chair, Governance Institute of Australia; Linda Scott (GAICD), Chair, Care Super; Councillor, City of Sydney; and President, Australian Local Government Association, Adam Davids, Partner, First Nations Equity Partners, and Mark Baxter,BEc, FIAA, CERA, FGIA, Co-Founder, Australian LGBTQ Board & Executive Inclusion (ALBEI).   What remains with me is the comment made by someone at my table – “It is daunting to go into the unknown. Being one of just 32 women out of 291 managing directors/district directors nationwide to take the helm with Northwestern Mutual is not just an achievement; it's a testament to the journey of progress and inclusivity. What makes this even more special for me is that I'm proudly the only openly LGBTQ individual among this remarkable group! 🏳️🌈👏 This opportunity to lead in a field traditionally dominated by others holds deep personal significance. It's a reminder of how far we've come in terms of breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes. It reinforces my belief that leadership knows no boundaries or restrictions, and it serves as an example for others to embrace their authentic selves. As an openly LGBTQ leader, I am committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity. I want to be a source of inspiration and support for those who may have felt marginalized or underrepresented in leadership roles before. Together, we can foster an environment where everyone's unique perspective is not only valued but celebrated. My leadership journey has taught me that diversity is our strength, and it's through our differences that we can innovate, inspire, and make a meaningful impact. Top 100 companies in Denmark: None of the 176 CEOs or Chairs are openly part of the LGTBQ community according to data provided by Denominator.   Generally, it is statically difficult to research the LGTBQ community as it can be fluid but also subject to dark numbers. When accounting for educational background, 8% of the men and 13% of the women in top leadership positions in Denmark should be part of the LGTBQ community according to Børsen. I'm honored to announce my inclusion in the Top 50 Diverse Board Candidate list, a prestigious recognition by Equilar and the Nasdaq Center for Board Excellence. This esteemed list is compiled every 2 years and spotlights outstanding board candidates from underrepresented demographic groups who embody the essential leadership and strategic skills crucial for effective board service. Having served on private company and non-profit boards of directors since 2000, I am eager to increase LGBTQ representation on public company boards. As I have stated previously, a recent Gallup study shows 7% of the adult population self identifies as LGBTQ . However, for Gen Z, that percentage jumps to a whopping 20%, and over 25% for females. Yet today, only 1% of public company board members self-identify as LGBTQ . There is no question that closing this underrepresentation gap will help companies win the war for talent by creating an inclusive culture that will attract and retain the best people and allow them the opportunity to perform at their peak potential.
