"Say What? Exploring the Fascinating Linguistic Quirks That Define South Florida's Identity." A new dialect has emerged in South Florida that is a unique blend of English and Spanish. This dialect, known as "Miaminglish," is spoken by people of all backgrounds, but is most common among second and third-generation immigrants. The dialect is characterized by the use of calques, which are words or phrases that are borrowed from Spanish and incorporated into English. For example, the phrase “bajar del carro,” which is transformed into “get down from the car,” not “get out of the car,” as it would be in traditional English. “Empanada de carne” becomes “meat empanada” instead of “beef empanada,” and so several direct translations from Spanish. The emergence of Miaminglish is a testament to the cultural diversity of South Florida. The region is home to a large number of Spanish speakers, and this has led to a linguistic mixing that has created a new and unique dialect. Why I only translate into French French (you read that right). 🥖 You might know that many languages, like English, Spanish and French, are spoken in various regions and countries. These language varieties or lects can diverge in their phonology, lexicon, syntax and morphology. This means that as a native translator from France, I only offer services in French from France, targeting a French audience. Besides the clear linguistic differences, the reason why I care to systematically specify which variety I work in is because still too often, it is considered as the standard (and only valid) French language, which tends to invisibilize other lects and even perpetuate linguistic discrimination around the world. However, some professionals do localize in varieties that are not native to them with some proper tools and training, depending on the kind of content they work with. Did you know about this? The problems translators solve   Solidarity in four different languages.   Today: French.   Translators face knotty terms most days; terms that present problems when it comes to deciding on the English word that best fits the context. 🤔 I recently wrote a post on my blog (link in comments) about the word ‘solidarity’, after hearing December’s Reith Lectures on ‘The Future of Solidarity’. Hearing ‘solidarity’ as the lecture title got me thinking. I would argue that what we English speakers think of as ‘solidarity’ is not necessarily what French, Spanish or Portuguese speakers think of when they say ‘solidarité’, ‘solidaridad’ or ‘solidariedade’. Or has this changed? I consulted my trusty bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, did some deep digging with some other sources, and looked at some real-life examples from my translation work. These are the dictionary and corpora results I found for French. 👇 I’ll post my Spanish and Portuguese findings later this week. What do you notice about the English definitions and examples, compared with those in the other languages? Some sources provide quite a few different examples from specific contexts and sectors. One glaringly obvious thing is that we don’t often use the word ‘solidary’ in English.   Well I don’t!   Perhaps you also notice subtle differences in nuance, or perhaps you don’t think they differ much at all.   Here’s what I notice: the examples in context are what get you closer to what the term might actually mean. 😎    #FrenchLanguage #TranslationChallenges #LiTranslators
