Chicken rules fast food in South Africa and Zimbabwe. In South Africa, chicken spots like KFC, Chicken Licken, and Hungry Lion make the top 5. Zimbabwe is even more dominated by chicken, with Pizza Inn the only exception in the top 5. Why is chicken so popular? From discussions I've had, the main reasons are cost and the versatility of chicken compared to other proteins. This makes sense. Looking at the Feedr Meat Price Index, the cheaper cuts of beef are still 13% - 23% more expensive than chicken. On versatility, chicken can be served in many more ways than other proteins. Just ask Nandos who have Pitas, Burgers, Bowls, Salads, Wraps and more. These factors and the fact that people love to eat Chicken seem to explain why as a business it's an attractive fast food option. In South Africa, most of the Top 5 brands or franchises are owned by different companies. In Zimbabwe, however, Simbisa Brands owns Chicken Inn and Pizza Inn and has the Nandos franchise rights. This gives them an edge in dominating the fast food space. We are in the food-beverage industry, this makes us responsible for "feeding" our customers: - with content, not just advertising - with discovery, not just sales - where and how they want to eat and drink, not just where the current distribution services Consumers order from restaurants way more often than they go grocery shopping.
