AI safety and security. As the UK idiom says: “more haste, less speed”. In the race to go to market, are we cutting corners on how we go to market? This week “Science” has published a paper calling “on major tech companies and public funders to allocate at least one-third of their AI R&D budget, comparable to their funding for AI capabilities, toward addressing the […] R&D challenges and ensuring AI safety and ethical use“. The paper identifies the concrete R&D challenges and makes pointed governance recommendations. In my view ,it provides an interesting comparison framework for the EU’s AI Act. “A first set of R&D areas needs breakthroughs to enable reliably safe AI. Without this progress, developers must either risk creating unsafe systems or falling behind competitors who are willing to take more risks. If ensuring safety remains too difficult, extreme governance measures would be needed to prevent corner-cutting driven by competition and overconfidence.” The paper concludes: “To steer AI toward positive outcomes and away from catastrophe, we need to reorient. There is a responsible path—if we have the wisdom to take it.”👇🏻👇🏻

🇧🇴 #Bolivia’s transition from an associated state to a full member of #Mercosur, with a four-year adaptation period, brings both opportunities and challenges. Politically, this could further complicate internal and external agreements for Mercosur. Economically, Bolivia’s membership could enhance regional integration by increasing trade and cooperation in sectors like infrastructure and energy. However, the country faces significant challenges, including a decline in gas exports and a struggling economy, which may limit immediate benefits. The integration also impacts Mercosur’s dynamics, with potential tension between members, such as with Argentina, exacerbated by recent diplomatic disputes. Bolivia’s vast #lithium reserves could strengthen Mercosur’s strategic importance, particularly in the context of global energy transitions. The integration process will require Bolivia to align with Mercosur’s regulations and policies while navigating internal and external economic pressures. Successful adaptation could bolster the bloc’s collective influence and open new markets for member states. However, the effectiveness of this integration will depend on resolving political tensions and leveraging Bolivia’s economic potential within the regional framework. Economist José Gustavo Pérego from ABECEB suggests that Bolivia's accession to Mercosur is part of a somewhat outdated strategy to provide "political dynamism rather than commercial benefits" of the block. He does not expect an increase in trade since Bolivia was already part of the Aladi framework.
