WhyTenerife?

Last Friday and coordinated through our associate the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a WhyTenerife? delegation visited the hospital ship Global Mercy, currently docked at the port's south dock. The visit was made with the aim of showcasing the impressive humanitarian work carried out by the ship and its dedicated team of volunteers. The delegation, made up of prominent personalities such as Pedro Ángel González Delgado, Francisco Paredes Pérez, and Silvia Rodríguez Pérez, had the opportunity to tour the ship's advanced facilities, which include six operating rooms, 200 beds, a laboratory, outpatient clinics and offices specialized in ophthalmology and dentistry. The Global Mercy, which previously used Granadilla as its home port during the pandemic, is now fully equipped and ready to embark on its next humanitarian mission in Africa Luz Marina Espiau, Head of the Commercial and Business Development Division of the Port Authority, highlighted the innovative aspects of the ship's deployment: "For the first time, we are going to install solidarity tents here in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from July 19 to 28. These tents will allow the public to learn about Global Mercy's mission, contribute with donations and even sign up as volunteers. This initiative is unprecedented in a European port and underlines the role of our community in global humanitarian efforts. The Global Mercy, the world's largest civilian hospital ship, has been meticulously equipped with advanced medical technology and is staffed by a diverse crew from more than 60 nations. The ship's capabilities include performing thousands of surgeries annually and training local healthcare professionals, leaving a lasting impact on the communities it serves. The Why Tenerife delegation's visit concluded with an expression of deep gratitude for the mission of Global Mercy and the significant contributions of its volunteers. The event reinforced the strong ties between the Port Authority and Mercy Ships, paving the way for continued collaboration in bringing hope and healing to those in need. Yesterday, we received a Norwegian delegation of owners and managers of “small” family-owned fish farming companies including their export company. Each firm is producing about 2000-4000 tons of salmon per year and after the presentation, business options were discussed and are being analysed.
