This week, Norman Foster joined Bloomberg, Mike Bloomberg, Patti Harris, and Dean Sarah Whiting from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University to welcome the eighth class of mayors to the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. This yearlong professional management training programme, housed at the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard, was established by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Business School. It is the first of its kind to close the gap in executive development for the public sector. These 39 mayors from around the world band together to learn how to harness innovation and build their cities’ futures for their residents. The Norman Foster Foundation is grateful for the generous patronage of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which focuses on educating the civic leaders of the future as part of the Norman Foster Institute’s Programme on Sustainable Cities. Since the start of the Norman Foster Institute's Programme on Sustainable Cities in January, the scholars have partaken in an extensive range of seminars given by renowned experts from around the world. This instruction has been divided into modules consisting of Climate & Natural Environment, Networks & Mobility, Planning & Buildings, Resources & Energy, Culture & the Arts, and Economy & Social Activity. However, we are now entering a new stage of the programme where we translate ideas into action through engaging with the three Pilot Cities for 2024: San Marino, Athens, and Bilbao. This direct engagement with the three Pilot Cities is a very special part of this programme. For the duration of this week, the scholars will engage in activities such as meetings with local representatives, site visits, and discussions with community leaders. Our scholars will ask questions — many questions! — to understand the particular issues facing these cities and to consider the strategies that may be appropriate. The group of scholars working on the city of Bilbao has already held back-to-back meetings with technical experts, who provided a comprehensive social diagnosis of local problems. Additionally, the scholars conducted a youth workshop, which proved highly valuable, yielding significant data on young people’s perceptions of the city and the issues they face. Stay tuned for more. #SustainableCities #NormanFosterInstitute #NormanFosterFoundation #Bilbao Eider Inunciaga Serna
