The European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) is an Agency of the Council of the European Union. It supports the decision making and actions of the EU in the context of Europe’s Common Foreign and Security Policy by providing products and services resulting from the exploitation of relevant space assets and collateral data, including satellite imagery and aerial imagery, and related services. Beneficiaries of SatCen services are the European External Action Service, EU Member States, CSDP missions and operations, the European Commission, Third States and international organisations such as the UN, OPCW and OSCE. Since 2016, SatCen is the Entrusted Entity of the Copernicus Service on Support to EU External and Security Actions (Copernicus SESA), contributing to the operational implementation of the security component of the Copernicus Programme.

SatCen was honoured to participate in the Montreal Climate Security Summit, joining the panel on “Data and Climate Security: Enhancing Awareness for Informed Action.” SatCen’s Capability Development Coordinator, Ms. Alessandra Ussorio, highlighted how the Centre is shifting from a reactive to a proactive approach to support strategic foresight regarding EU climate security risks. On 15-16 October, the SatCen RTDI team attended the 3rd Destination Earth (#DestinE) User eXchange in Germany. The event brought together users and developers of DestinE, an EU initiative building a high-precision digital model of Earth ( accessible through the DestinE Platform here: https://bit.ly/3NKDIRe ) using advanced AI, vast datasets, and innovative Earth system models. Engaging with DestinE experts, SatCen explored Digital Twin capabilities for security-focused applications. On 17 October, #SatCen Director Louis T. took part in the CISE High-Level Event, where he discussed SatCen’s geospatial intelligence capabilities in the context of Maritime Security. He highlighted SatCen’s critical role in supporting the EU Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS), as well as its operational involvement in key initiatives like CISE and MARSUR. Through innovative space-based intelligence, SatCen helps bolster the EU’s security decision-making, benefiting both the EU and its Member States. Notably, a technical exercise successfully connected MARSUR and CISE nodes at SatCen, enabling real-time data sharing with stakeholders like EMSA, EDA, and Member States. SatCen’s involvement in CISE and participation in CISE-ALERT offer a significant opportunity to test and validate the potential for information-sharing between stakeholders, which ultimately enhances Maritime Domain Awareness.
