From the 🏆 #WallOfShame to 💙 #BlueHairFame: Piper's co-founder stories for getting his team to "do their pipeline"

Ver el perfil de Sergio Gonzalez, gráfico

Who's been a sales manager and not struggled to get their team to 'do their pipeline' in the CRM? Over the better part of the last decade, I've explored numerous methods to coax and cajole people into staying on top of it. But I think my most harebrained (or should I say desperate) attempts were suffered by the poor Twitter Dublin Sales team. 🏆 With the "Pipeline Hall of Shame" I tried to use a bit of peer pressure to encourage timely pipeline updates. Top pipeline offenders were featured at the top of the list. It turned out to be a badge of honor rather than a deterrent, with salespeople boasting about topping the list while smashing their Sales targets! (ahem, Ross S.) 🦷 "Doing your pipeline is like brushing your teeth." This idea came to me after reading 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg. I planned to coach the team into habit formation best practices applied to pipelining. Fortunately, Don O'Leary talked me out of it. 👕 The "Put That in Your Pipe and Smoke It" T-shirts were part of a competition. The cleanest pipeline would win this cool T-shirt. However, since the prize remained unclaimed (no clean pipelines), the T-shirts ended up free for anyone to grab from a table. 🍕 Then there was "Pipeline Pizza parties". We blocked people's agendas at 5pm and ordered pizza. The catch? If you wanted your pizza, you had to project your screen and do your pipeline live, for everyone to see. Didn't really work. But... Pizza. 💙 The "Blue Hair Dare" was a unique challenge: achieve 100% pipeline completion, and I'll dye my hair blue. This tactic actually worked, and I went all in, broadcasting the hair dyeing process live on Twitter. It made me a trending topic in Ireland for a day and even caught the attention of Jack Dorsey himself, who retweeted me. It was effective, but let's just say it wasn't the most scalable strategy. On one level, I’m a bit sad that launching PiperAI.com, which does your pipeline on autopilot, will deprive sales teams of these sort of enjoyment. On the other hand, there really is no bad excuse for getting your team some good pizza. 🚀 Exciting Times at Piper: Building a Vibrant Company Culture! Yesterday, we kicked off Q1 with a bang! Among all the strategic discussions about our 2024 goals and the exciting product roadmap, we enjoyed a unique experience - a “Calçotada," a delightful Catalan tradition. We believe that these values are the solid foundation of our organization, guiding us as we navigate challenges, celebrate victories, and shape the future of Piper. In the fast-paced world of startups, where innovation and collaboration are key, a strong company culture is the glue that binds us together. It fuels creativity, encourages open communication, and empowers each team member to bring their best selves to the table. 🤖 Breaking the CRM Code: How can AI shatter an Age-Old Tradeoff ⚡

Ver el perfil de Sergio Gonzalez, gráfico

CRMs represent a tough investment to justify. Beyond monthly licenses, the cost of training and enforcement—entire SalesOps teams are hired just to ensure salespeople properly “manage their pipelines”—CMRs come with a productivity hit, as time spent on CRMs is time not spent with clients. All for what? Often, just to end with poor, low quality data. The core issue: CRMs are built on the unsound premise that salespeople will diligently fill them out. After years of trying to cajole our teams into this—probably a story for another post—our conclusion is CRMs won’t work as long as they depend on humans doing the data entry. SalesOps teams have been trying for years to make data entry easier to maximize the information value in the CRM. They constantly try to hit that sweet spot between grabbing all the info they need and what they can actually get from folks who aren't exactly thrilled about detailed CRM entries. In experience as a SalesOps leader, even after several rounds of workflow optimization, the improvements in data quality are meager and require continuous monitoring and enforcement. Imagine now fully AI-automated data entry. Suddenly, CRM fields are accurate, prompt, and unbiased—This is immediate and direct, just replace humans with AI and you’ll see a leap in data quality beyond any SalesOps team’s reach. But there's more to it. We're excited about the second-order benefits of AI-driven automation that we're seeing from Piper users. As tracking costs and effort plummet, the old dilemma between the number of CRM fields and data quality just disappears. This freedom allows VPs, managers and SalesOps to get creative, and expansive, with their tracking—think buying intent signals, fine user segmentation, and much, much more. Whatsmore, as AI analyzes data across broader dimensions and larger datasets, it's revealing hidden patterns. These insights can revolutionize everything from marketing strategy, to churn prevention. What wild things would you start systematically tracking if you could do it at no cost? 💡 #SalesOps, #AI, #Automation, #DataQuality, #SalesInsights
