With over 144 projects worth 184 million USD, operating in 57 sites, the LSHTM Malaria Centre houses Europe's largest number of malaria researchers, students and support staff. 🦟Malaysia would have eliminated malaria, if not for the rise of Plasmodium Knowlesi, also known as monkey malaria. 🐒 It thrives in hosts such as macaques but there are increasing number of human infections, especially driven by human activities such as deforestation. P. knowlesi holds many unanswered questions, such as its transmission mechanism or its complete geographic distribution; threatening the effectiveness of malaria control and elimination strategies. The spread of the disease to humans is driven by deforestation. 💉 How can we get vaccine development & delivery right? Stephanie Nolen's latest piece in the NY Times presents the story of the malaria vaccine as a "cautionary tale." The challenges of getting "unprofitable vaccines" to those who need them are multifacted: complex regulatory processes, competiting priorities in the private sector; and funding shortages for R&D of neglected and poverty-related diseases. These systemic issues hinder progress and prevent millions of children in endemic countries from growing up without the shadow of malaria. Until we fix these bottlenecks in vaccine development & delivery, immunization efforts will continue to fall short of reaching those most in need. https://lnkd.in/dZQ2tcNB
