MESA - The Malaria Knowledge Hub
Salud pública
Sharing knowledge and catalyzing research towards a malaria-free world.
Sobre nosotros
MESA aims to achieve its mission by working along the three strategic areas: 1. Mapping the landscape of active malaria research projects 2. Creating effective avenues for stakeholders to use emerging data for policies and strategies 3. Bridging the gap between research and impact by supporting evidence-generation that responds to endemic country priorities and stakeholder engagement. With tools like #MESATrack (the malaria projects database), #MESAResourceHub (a growing archive of resources to fight malaria), and initiatives like the #MESACorrespondents program and our Grants & Events calendar, we to expand open access knowledge on malaria.

📣 Thrilled to announce that the #MESADeepDive on Malaria Molecular Surveillance is now published! We've mapped 122 MMS projects worth $188.4M worldwide, as well as their funders, covering use cases like drug resistance, gene deletions, and more. 🔎 Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dFr69Yb8 Thanks to everyone who contributed to our Call for Inputs—your efforts have been crucial. Since this is an ongoing mapping, we remain open to receiving any inputs on malaria molecular surveillance projects and investments. Please contact MESA at [email protected] if you would like your work to be included. Our Deep Dive aims to map global MMS efforts to facilitate coordination, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of interoperability standards. We're building a ‘Community of Practice’ to address challenges like standardizing molecular data, training bioinformaticians, and establishing surveillance platforms. 🔔 Stay tuned to learn about the CoP and the resource collection planned to be launched in the coming months by subscribing to our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/ew7ayC3y Helen Nnenaya Nwanosike MD MPH Nana Aba Williams

📣 A collection of resources to respond to the threat of Anopheles stephensi invasion, curated by Helen Nnenaya Nwanosike MD MPH. The emergence of the invasive malaria vector Anopheles stephensi, traditionally an Asian malaria vector, has now been detected in various parts of Africa where the burden of malaria is highest. To support national malaria programs, researchers and other stakeholders access a range of useful resources to inform decision-making and support surveillance, MESA's resource collection serves as a living archive. 🦟Malaysia would have eliminated malaria, if not for the rise of Plasmodium Knowlesi, also known as monkey malaria. 🐒 It thrives in hosts such as macaques but there are increasing number of human infections, especially driven by human activities such as deforestation. P. knowlesi holds many unanswered questions, such as its transmission mechanism or its complete geographic distribution; threatening the effectiveness of malaria control and elimination strategies. The spread of the disease to humans is driven by deforestation. Sarah Neewey's latest report highlights this significant issue, shedding light on the important research taking place in the Malaysian Borneo to stop the spread of this disease: https://lnkd.in/gDYG364g The MESA team has mapped the landscape of current research activities related to this parasite in this Deep Dive on Plasmodium knowlesi: We have systematically gathered and validated information through online databases and direct contact with expert researchers so that you get a comprehensive picture of the state of research and investments on this topic. 🔵 P. knowlesi Deep Dive: https://lnkd.in/dZuVC5uj 📩 We invite you to check out this Deep Dive and connect with us if your P. knowlesi projects are not reflected in the map. 💉 How can we get vaccine development & delivery right? Stephanie Nolen's latest piece in the NY Times presents the story of the malaria vaccine as a "cautionary tale." The challenges of getting "unprofitable vaccines" to those who need them are multifacted: complex regulatory processes, competiting priorities in the private sector; and funding shortages for R&D of neglected and poverty-related diseases. These systemic issues hinder progress and prevent millions of children in endemic countries from growing up without the shadow of malaria. Until we fix these bottlenecks in vaccine development & delivery, immunization efforts will continue to fall short of reaching those most in need. https://lnkd.in/dZQ2tcNB
The first vaccine for malaria received major regulatory approval in 2015.

🔬 Are you passionate about advancing malaria control through molecular surveillance? Your expertise is crucial in shaping effective malaria control programs. Integrated Malaria Molecular Surveillance (iMMS) is a powerful tool, yet establishing robust molecular surveillance platforms in-country presents numerous challenges, from securing resources to implementing standardized laboratory protocols. 🧬🤝 MESA is committed to mapping MMS investments and identifying key networks, initiatives, and resources to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. By contributing to this initiative, you will help establish interoperability standards, allowing for data aggregation from multiple sources. This collective effort will enable a broad network of scientists to capture the diverse interactions sustaining malaria transmission in endemic countries. 📩 We invite you to share your work in MMS by writing to us at [email protected].
