🌿 On this World Nature Conservation Day, we celebrate the incredible diversity and beauty of our natural world while recognizing the urgent need to protect it. From the vital wetlands to the vibrant marine ecosystems, our planet's health is essential for our well-being and survival. 🐟 At the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN Med), we are committed to safeguarding the Mediterranean, the world’s second largest biodiversity hotspot. Over the past two decades, we have worked tirelessly to address threats, from plastic pollution to mass tourism. Over the past two years alone, our efforts include: 🌊 Tackling plastic pollution 🏖️ Developing and implementing strategies for sustainable tourism 📱 Creating tools to manage and mitigate the impact of invasive species 📈 Empowering conservation actors across North Africa 🌅 Enhancing coastal restoration practices 🌱 Introducing a new working line to expand our work to agricultural and food systems Our 2022-2023 biennial report highlights the progress we've made and the invaluable support provided by key donors. Explore our journey and learn how we are working to preserve the Mediterranean: https://lnkd.in/drRDp2n7 We also celebrate our selection as one of the European regional organisations by the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 4) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to bolster the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 🌍 Let's protect our natural world for future generations! #worldnatureconservationday #natureconservation #Biodiversity #unitedfornature

Can dune restoration combat coastal erosion? 🌊🌿 Wind, water, and human activity have all left several European coasts vulnerable to flooding and extreme tides, endangering both human and marine life. By using nature-based solutions like sand traps coupled with drone monitoring, IMPETUS partners in Catalonia have successfully restored dunes and protected beaches from erosion and storms. This sustainable approach not only safeguards the environment but also supports local communities and tourism. 🌍✨ If you want to find out more about our partners’ dune restoration work in Catalonia, then check out our new video! 🌍 Exciting news for #Mediterranean conservation! Parc Marin de la Côte Bleue and Cerbère-Banyuls Natural Marine Reserve in France, along with Sierra Nevada National and Natural Park in Spain, have successfully renewed their IUCN Green List status. They are amongst the 76 sites globally recognized for their effective governance and fair management. 📅 In May 2024, four new sites joined the Green List, and ten sites renewed their status. Notably, three of these renewals are from the Mediterranean region. These three sites continue to meet the Green List standards of fair and effective management and will remain on the list for another five years. Congratulations to these sites for their dedication to preserving our natural heritage 🌿 Learn more about these sites: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eikbaPQK ➡ https://iucngreenlist.org/ #Conservation #IUCNGreenList #Biodiversity

Registrations to the 8th Mediterranean Forest Week are OPEN!!! Enrol now and join IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation together with researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to debate the future of Mediterranean forests. IUCN is chairing the session on #Mediterranean #Forests #Biodiversity, on 5 November at 8:30 CEST. ✍ Register here: https://bit.ly/RegMFW Hosted in the stunning Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this flagship Mediterranean forest networking event will take place from 4 – 8 November 2024 in Barcelona. The Joint Organising Committee (JOC) includes 15 organisations led by the FAO Committee of Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea and the EFI Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED) and promises a rich and engaging programme. Six plenary sessions, with panel discussions and associated posters, preceded by preparatory webinars will be held on: 🌿 Building resilience: #Restoration strategies and policies for Mediterranean forest ecosystems. 🔥Wildfire prevention and post-fire restoration. 🌳Mediterranean forest biodiversity. 🌤 Climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean forests. 🏘 Green cities for adaptation and #resilience: Co-benefits for human health, environment, and society. 💸 Forest-related development #cooperation and available financial instruments for the Mediterranean. 8FMFW will provide opportunities for #youth participation to address challenges like unemployment, high NEET (not in education, employment, or training) rates, lack of financial opportunities, and lack of inclusion and participation in local and international decision-making. Field trips on Wednesday 6 November will provide the opportunity to explore critical forest issues, such as #wildfires and ecosystem #degradation, and local initiatives to address them. Participants will be able to share their profile and work focus, both online and during the event, to #network and learn, discuss, debate, and connect with professionals in Mediterranean forestry. Be part of the change. Be part of the future. More about us 👉 https://lnkd.in/dgTrGJye Explore #8MFW activities 🔎 https://lnkd.in/eUEuRwqZ

The UN Biodiversity Post2020 Biodiversity Framework - EU support, together with the EU #Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, is calling for an expansion of protection to at least 30% of the land and sea. Key Biodiversity Areas #KBAs are a critical tool for focusing on the most important places for nature. Through the GaP project "Guiding expansion of protection under the EU Biodiversity Strategy: Threatened species and novel methods for Key Biodiversity Area identification", IUCN aims to strengthen the protected area network in the EU by identifying priority areas for safeguarding global and EU biodiversity, and to influence Conservation Policy in the EU by building capacity for KBA identification in EU countries and providing guidance for the expansion of the protected area network under the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation is proud to count on Catherine Numa as Regional Focal Point for the #Mediterranean, North Africa, and Middle East, working to help establish the KBA National Coordination Group in #Spain. Discover the latest news about the most important sites in the 🌎 for #biodiversity 🌐 https://bit.ly/3WnV9fF Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico UICN España EU Environment and Climate
Spain is one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe and is critical for the implementation of the #KBA program in the region. In 2023, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation and SEO/BirdLife coordinated the elaboration of the Terms of Reference, which were adopted in the first Identification and Delineation KBA training held in December 2023. The current NCG (National Coordination Group) is composed of 17 experts from 13 Spanish institutions, supported by the Regional Focal Point based in Malaga, and two consultants. Discover more 👇

🌍 Today, International Day of Combatting Sand and Dust Storms, we raise awareness on these natural phenomena. These events, while part of the Earth's natural biochemical cycle, are intensified by climate change and soil degradation, impacting ecosystems, agriculture, and air quality. However, they also transport essential nutrients, such as iron and phosphorus, to marine and terrestrial ecosystems, illustrating their complex role in ecological balance. To mitigate the negative effects of sand and dust storms, it is crucial to implement actions such as reforestation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable land management, and to foster international cooperation. IUCN is proud to be part of the Air Quality, Energy, and Health Coalition, a joint initiative by the UN Environment Management Group that aims to address these interrelated issues and promote comprehensive solutions. The United Nations has declared the decade 2025-2034 as the Decade for Combatting Sand and Dust Storms. This initiative emphasizes the urgency of global and coordinated action to address these challenges and protect both human health and the environment. The declaration of this decade is a call for action for all countries, urging them to implement effective mitigation and adaptation strategies, and to collaborate in research and knowledge exchange. 🔗 Explore further information: https://bit.ly/4cYnL4w http://bit.ly/3VTmcxC https://bit.ly/460o3FM #InternationalDayofCombattingSandandDustStorms #climatechange
