Big news for us as InsectBiotech. Our progress and mission to tackle climate change causing emissions from agri waste has been recogised by a major Spanish government agency. Now that may not been much to you, I appreciate, but its huge for a start up like IB. We are now a certified innovator, and have access to both funding and investor tax breaks as head to our first factory/farm build. So I wrote a little blog post about it, and here that post is: https://lnkd.in/d_4sdSY3

Sobre nosotros
We want to play a significant role in tackling the climate and protein challenges. We will do that with relentless focus on how we can help transform agricultural inputs from having a deforestation and ocean trashing footprint, to having a net positive impact on agriculture. The InsectBiotech Group and its products, will offer positive solutions to crucial environmental issues, empower rural communities, tackle food waste, develop a circular industrial model, and make profits whilst doing so. Circular industrial innovation that has a net positive impact on people and the environment is entirely possible. We’re here to help demonstrate how it can be done. Our business is what we call a “Triple play”: We’ll reduce industrial agricultural waste, create jobs and income in rural areas in the EU, and provide a net positive protein feedstock for animals, and other circular, innovative bio-based products as a result.

Here's a quick ten minute podcast on our lastest news: We won an award for best impact start up at the Alhambra Venture awards last week. So here's a conversation with our CEO Ignacio Gavilan about it, and the progress we have made turning large volumes of real waste (not chicken feed) into sustainable protein and fertiliser (samples are now available, let us know if you'd like some) https://lnkd.in/dAtwjDBk

🎉 We won the Alhambra Venture Impact Award 2024! 🎉 We’re thrilled to share that our hard work paid off, and we took home the Alhambra Venture Impact Award 2024. This recognition is for the startup with the most environmental and circularity impact potential among 38 finalists and over 1000 applicants. Here’s what we learned along the way: 1. Raising Awareness: There's still limited understanding about how insects can bioconvert waste and the potential business opportunities this presents. 2. Education on Innovation: Black Soldier Fly larvae as waste bio converters are a new concept. Explaining the process and its outcomes is crucial. 3. Clarification is Key: We emphasized that our business is a scale play, aiming for five plants covering 150,000 sqm by 2031—not just a 'garage' start-up. 4. Investor Curiosity: Investors showed great interest in our scalability, funding, operations, and market potential, especially when we highlighted that even a 5% shift in the feed market towards insect protein represents an $86 billion revenue opportunity. The event was a fantastic platform to engage with over 1000 attendees, including 400 investors, local, regional, and national government representatives, and various key stakeholders. We presented a 3-minute video and pitch, which opened up numerous face-to-face discussions about our business. Our CEO, Ignacio Gavilan, and the IB team were there to share our vision, and we even recorded a short podcast on our experience. Stay tuned for more updates on our patent filings and extraordinary Q2 test results. Check out the podcast for deeper insights into our journey and learnings. #AlhambraVenture #ImpactAward2024 #Startups #Sustainability #Innovation #CircularEconomy #InvestmentOpportunity #BlackSoldierFly #InsectProtein Listen to our podcast here: https://lnkd.in/dAtwjDBk

What does our R&D show about converting waste to value? During 2024 we’ve been working with the University of Granada to test how pre-treatment of waste can deliver the low carbon, high nutritional value products that our customers want to buy. We’ll continue working with them for the rest of the year and into 2025. Here's a quick update on our progress (hint: we've worked out how to do it) https://lnkd.in/d4dhwAt5

We’ve just hired our first insect expert. His name is Fred, and he’s going to lead our work on how black soldier fly larvae will effectively convert waste to high value products for InsectBiotech. Here's a Q&A with him. Frederico C. Muzzi https://lnkd.in/eeMhPkzW

Announcing InsectBiotech as a finalist for Best Startup at Alhambra Venture 2024. We might win, and of course, we think we deserve to. But even if we don’t, we’re going to learn a lot and meet the investors and partners IB will need in the coming months and years. So, what is Alhambra Venture? It looks like a fascinating event, which has been running for a decade in Spain. It brings together start-ups from across southern Spain, with investors and others, to look at how innovation can be funded and scaled up. https://lnkd.in/d_swzKSi

A quick update on the work we are doing at www.insectbiotech.eu We’re a purpose driven ‘biomass waste to value’ B2B start up making high value protein, oils and fertiliser from agricultural waste. We’ve found the largest collection of feedstock in the world in one place (olive waste in Spain, 4m tonnes a year). We’ve worked out how to convert that waste (at 80%, 20% waste carbs from beer, bread etc) into protein and fertiliser. The pre-treatment is the key, and we’ve run 100 trials already, and have extraordinary results re conversion rate. We’re using Black Solider Fly larvae to bio-convert this pre-treated olive waste into the high value protein, oils and fertiliser. The protein (milled, ground, frozen or dried larvae) is a nutritious, low carbon, regenerative ingredient for petfood, aquaculture and animal feed. The fertiliser (called Frass) is a biogenic, regenerative, soil health enhancing, low carbon fertiliser ideal for agriculture. We’ve got two production units running, one at the University of Granada, with six scientists working on it. The second is at an olive oil mill nearby, to further test pre-treated feedstock for optimal larvae growth. Our ‘secret sauce’ is the pre-treatment, using natural products/options, to make the waste deliver the larvae growth and nutritional profile that we need. We’ve raised significant seed capital, and looking for the same again, to complete our trials and prepare for series A raise. We aim to build a 10,000 tonne PA facility near the olive waste, by 2026/7. There will be a lot of matched funding/grants/debt in that raise. Right now we are about to confirm some local investors on board in Spain for the seed round completion. But we need some more seed money, so looking to find more high net worth investors/Angels/Family offices, in Spain or anywhere else. We are filing patents for IP protection in June, and locking in feedstock suppliers long term with joint venture approaches, which are being set up now. [email protected] for anyone interested. Thanks for reading ans sharing!
