In our “Curbing AMR” series, we’re shining a light on antimicrobial resistance and how to combat this rising threat to the health of everybody on the planet. One thing we can all do when we are prescribed antibiotics: always finish the entire course! 💊   But why does this matter so much?   It may be tempting to stop taking antibiotics as soon as you start to feel better. But by leaving those pills in the medicine cabinet, you could be giving the remaining bacteria in your body an opportunity to survive – and thrive.   When bacteria survive an antibiotic treatment, they can develop resistance to the antibiotic they’ve been exposed to. This gives them an advantage as they multiply and spread. Not only can this cause a resurgence of infection in your own body, but it also fuels the rise of AMR if the resistant bacteria spread to others.   Next time they encounter that antibiotic, these bacteria will be ready to resist. Some can even transfer their resistance to other bacteria, like passing on battle tactics.   By preventing bacteria from developing drug resistance by using antibiotics as prescribed, we can protect the weapons we’ve developed to fight bacterial infections – antibiotics – and ensure they remain as effective as possible, for as long as possible. “When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer,” wrote Alexander Fleming. “But I suppose that was exactly what I did.”   On this day, we celebrate the 96th anniversary of Fleming’s accidental discovery. Since then, antibiotics have saved countless lives and have become the cornerstone of modern medicine.   But with the arrival of antibiotics came the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Dangerous bacteria have increasingly developed resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics, leading to drug-resistant infections that are harder and harder to treat.   That’s why it’s critical to act now against AMR – so that Fleming’s discovery can continue to save lives, for another 96 years and more. Curious to learn more about Alexander Fleming's 'accidental' discovery of penicillin? Read more below!

We're proud to have had our Global Communications & ESG team, along with Neil Moorhouse, our Country President in the Netherlands, meet with one of our CSR partners, Save the Children Nederland! Today, we had the opportunity to visit their head office in The Hague, where they shared the impact of our recent donation to their Global Emergency Health Unit (EHU). The EHU delivers essential healthcare services in some of the toughest and most hard-to-reach places, providing critical support like primary healthcare, disease prevention and treatment, vaccination campaigns, and maternal and child care. During the visit, we also discussed other inspiring projects addressing humanitarian, disaster, and health issues, while exploring exciting new ways we might collaborate in the future. A big thank you to Luuk Senten and the whole Save the Children team for hosting us and for your continued commitment to making a difference! #CSR #Sustainability #ESG #GlobalHealthcare

We say that “Centrient is a leader against antimicrobial resistance.” But what does this mean, and how are we leading the industry in tackling the deadly threat of AMR? First, let’s talk about responsible manufacturing: ➡️ As a founding member of the AMR Industry Alliance, we collaborate with a coalition of companies to find sustainable solutions and agree on shared standards. By working together, we can help curb AMR. ➡️ Across our supply chain, we address the risk of AMR from manufacturing waste discharge into the environment. ➡️ We have achieved compliance with limits set by the Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard. ➡️ Our sites are equipped with dedicated wastewater treatment plants. Treated water is stringently tested, including at an independent lab in the Netherlands. ➡️ Our teams have pioneered an innovative approach that uses betalactamase enzymes to destroy antibiotic material from wastewater streams.   We also show leadership by making the foundational medicines the world needs. We are committed to providing customers with a secure supply of critically needed APIs and compounds, including penicillin G and amoxicillin. Did you know that treating infections with the appropriate antibiotics is one significant way we can prevent the development and spread of AMR?   Finally, we invest in educational initiatives to raise awareness of AMR, highlight the dangers of antibiotic overuse and misuse, and empower young people. Read more about our workshops in India: https://lnkd.in/eZxB2yr6 That’s why we can say we’re proud to be a leader against AMR!

Date for the the diary: 26 September, 2024. 🗓️ That’s when world leaders will come together at #UNGA – the United Nations General Assembly – for the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Centrient is a member of the AMR Industry Alliance, and together we are calling on the UN and its Member States to increase their efforts in the fight against AMR, to work with stakeholders in the public and private sectors to identify and prioritize risk-based solutions to drastically curb the spread of AMR, and to include them in the High-Level Declaration on AMR.   By addressing the 4 points below, the UN and its Member States can help halt the rise of AMR and protect the effectiveness of antibiotics for generations to come:

We are thrilled to share that Centrient has been listed as a finalist for the CSR Initiative of the Year Award, in addition to the Leader of the Year and API Supplier of the Year categories, at the Global Generics and Biosimilars Awards 2024! As part of our ESG commitment and strategy, we run impactful CSR programs around the world, touching nearly 45,000 lives last year alone. We're particularly proud of our efforts around AMR (antimicrobial resistance) awareness and education. In India, we launched the "AMR Guardians of Tomorrow" campaign to teach kids about the growing threat of AMR. Together with Superheroes Against Superbugs (SaS), we held several engaging workshops, including a grassroots comics campaign, in Gurgaon, Punjab, and Toansa, reaching school children and university students alike. Our workshop sessions covered crucial topics such as the causes of AMR, risks of unregulated antibiotic sales, misuse in agriculture, and antimicrobial residues in wastewater. The initiative aims to empower the next generation to take informed actions against AMR, safeguarding public health for generations to come. We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a finalist for this award and remain committed to raising awareness and educating communities about the fight against AMR!
