With our team on the ground in Barcelona, Bluefield's water experts are closely following developments in Spain's #watermarket 🇪🇸. A few notable takeaways highlighted in our latest Quarterly Review for Europe Municipal Water clients: ✔️Spain leads Europe in #wastewater reuse, making it an influential example of addressing #waterscarcity and sustainability through advanced reuse technologies. Canal de Isabel II is constructing Spain’s first #greenhydrogen plant using recycled wastewater. With an expected production rate of 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day, the project is part of a €6.03 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund and a €1.2 billion investment from PRTR funding. This initiative opens a new business model around wastewater #reuse, which already covers 18% of Canal de Isabel II’s operations. ✔️The fragmented Spanish water market offers opportunities for incumbents and new entrants, particularly those focused on digitalization and infrastructure modernization. The Spanish water market is highly fragmented, with over 8,100 municipalities served by smaller systems. Spain's push toward modernization, particularly outside its largest cities, offers promising prospects for growth and consolidation, especially in #digitalwater solutions and infrastructure upgrades. ✔️Focused on urban water cycle digitalization, Spanish #PERTE funding will benefit both public and private players. Supported by EU funds, €500 million has already been allocated across 80 projects to digitalize Spain's urban #waterinfrastructure, showcasing the opportunities in 3P collaborations—spearheaded by AGBAR (Veolia), Aqualia, Global Omnium, and ACCIONA. These projects are expected to drive demand for digital water technology providers while strengthening private utilities’ role in local municipalities. We were proud to see Bluefield’s own Christine Ow serve as a juror at the Bentley Systems #YII2024 Going Digital Awards in Vancouver! The event showcased incredible #digitaltransformations in the water and #wastewater sectors, including Sabesp’s innovative approach to integrating digital tools as part of their Integra 4.0 strategy. Bentley’s partnership with Google and their acquisition of Cesium bring exciting new possibilities for water engineers and utility operators, enabling more advanced #digitaltwin applications and open platforms for co-innovation. As the industry continues to evolve, we look forward to seeing how these innovations will shape the future of #waterinfrastructure. Finally home after wrapping up a jam-packed two days at Bentley Systems #YII2024 in Vancouver, and I am brimming with inspiration. It's my second year in a row at YII, and Bentley truly pulled out all the stops with this year's conference. From increased geospatial technical capabilities from its recent acquisition of Cesium and partnership with Google to a continued commitment to sustainability with its new Carbon Analysis tool within #iTwin, Bentley does not cease to inspire. This year, I had the honor of serving as probably one of the youngest jurors for the Going Digital Awards. Shoutout to Alejandro Maceira Rozados and Tom Freyberg, I think we made an incredible team (Bob Crossen we missed you!). Congratulations to Sabesp, who was our well-deserving winner in the #water and #wastewater category. As a part of its Integra 4.0 strategy, Sabesp implemented a multitude of digital tools to bring together data streams and workflows, adopting cutting-edge technologies such as AI and achieving critical benefits for its customers. It was a digital transformation unlike any other, and the energy from Jose Herminio and Douglas Couri Jr. was infectious. It's been an exciting year in infrastructure, and I'm sure the next one will be even better. Lastly, thank you to the Bentley team Neda Simeonova, Gregg Herrin, PE, Sandra DiMatteo, Andrea DuMont, PE, Robert Mankowski, Richard J. Vestner, and Cecília Correia for the trust and continued support. Special shoutout to James P. Cooper, PE 💧, who brought all the humor, which was a cherry on top of an incredible conference.

If you had to rethink the U.S. water scene, where would you start? Here's what Bluefield President Reese Tisdale said on "(don't) Waste Water!" podcast, hosted by Antoine Walter, in the episode titled "The US has a $2 Trillion Water Problem": 💡 "It’s not the #technology that’s the issue. There’s plenty of great tech out there. The real challenge lies in business models, whether that's through financial empowerment or public-private partnerships, to deploy these solutions." A significant issue is the size and capacity of many U.S. #waterutilities. With 85% of these systems having fewer than 3 employees, strategic decision-making becomes nearly impossible—making it difficult to tackle critical issues like #PFAS, #lead contamination, and #aginginfrastructure. 🎧Tune in to the full episode featuring Reese, Mae Stevens, Aurélie Rodzynek, and Melisa Logan to hear the discussion: >> Listen on Apple Music: https://hubs.ly/Q02T3WQg0 >> Listen on Spotify: https://hubs.ly/Q02T47Xh0 >> Watch on YouTube: https://hubs.ly/Q02T48Mz0

💧 Show Me the Money: Where Are Utilities Investing in Water? Bluefield has analyzed capital improvement plans (CIPs) for 787 water utilities (saving our clients hours, if not days; or let's be honest, months of work). Our annual CIP data and analysis offer a clear snapshot of how utilities are allocating their budgets for water, #wastewater, and #stormwater projects. This isn't our first rodeo: This is our fourth year in a row we have undertaken this CIP analysis. We now have the context to track year-over-year shifts in funding. Our water experts have refined a methodology to collect, clean, and categorize these publicly available—but often messy—documents (utility budgets), transforming them into actionable data that can drive your business development efforts. This saves our clients the immense hassle of having to dig through inconsistent formats and budgets, giving them clear insights into utility investment trends. Based on client request, we've also added direct links to the individual utility capital improvement plans. Why do we undertake this data-intensive process for our clients each year? CIPs give us a chance to turn what we’re hearing from the industry—i.e. growing interest in cybersecurity or lead service line replacements—into concrete investment plans. How much does it cost to build a new #watertreatment plant? How does spending on PFAS mitigation compare to other key projects? What does the data tell us? Here are some highlights: 📈 Lead Service Line Replacement: 53 utilities plan a combined US$3 billion investment between 2024 and 2032, up 54% from last year’s #CIP. 💧 #PFAS Mitigation: 40 utilities plan US$186 million in projects, with Colorado accounting for 53% of this spending. 🛡 Cybersecurity: 65 utilities have allocated US$150 million to #cybersecurity in 2024, compared to US$115 million last year.
