Applying positive psychology in coaching enhances clients' self-awareness, resilience, and overall well-being by focusing on strengths and optimism. It empowers clients to set meaningful goals aligned with their values, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Positive emotions such as gratitude and hope are cultivated, leading to increased motivation and satisfaction. Clients develop healthier relationships, effective communication skills, and enhanced stress management techniques. By emphasizing mindfulness and presence, coaching with positive psychology facilitates sustainable change and personal growth.

Integrate resilience-building techniques into coaching sessions to help clients navigate challenges and setbacks with greater ease. Teach strategies for reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth and development.

Positive psychology is much more than gratitude or optimism. It is about enabling a client's growth starting from their strengths and positive values, but still allowing them to create realistic goals.

One thing I have found helpful is to support my clients to recognise their strengths, whether that is by using the VIA strengths survey or by just asking the client to identify what is important to them and then to identify what they do naturally. It is more about the language of strengths that allows the introspection for the client and the lightbulb moments.
Extending the strengths-based approach. I sometimes will implement what I call the positivity paradigm. Most business management systems and development approaches are anchored in taking below average performance and bringing it back to average. But what about taking above average performance and pushing it into exceptional. So it's one thing if a client has a "fatal flaw" that is undermining their performance. But otherwise, I prefer to focus on amplifying strengths for disproportionately right returns rather than focusing on making things average.

1. Identify and leverage the unique strengths of individuals. Use assessments like VIA Character Strengths to help leaders understand their core strengths and how to apply them effectively in their roles. 2. Encourage the setting of intrinsic goals that foster personal growth and satisfaction. 3. Techniques such as active constructive responding can enhance interpersonal connections and team cohesion.

By incorporating SMART elements, goals become tangible milestones that drive progress and success. Additionally, encourage regular feedback and reflection to track advancement and extract valuable lessons from both triumphs and setbacks.

It is important to stay focused and help individuals see that they already have the knowledge, skills, and strengths to overcome their challenges and achieve their goals. If individuals need extra support, it is important to help them see that support is available to them.

I have had the privilege of playing for multiple world class coaches. NHL coaches, ex NHL coaches, and future NHL coaches. As a player, I have experienced positive psychology as well as negative thinking/coaching from many different coaches. Sometimes they were too negative and positive psychology was much needed for certain players during specific times of the season. Other times some coaches may have thought they were using positive psychology, but in all reality they were just sugar coating a bad mistake or not being completely honest with the player and telling them what they really needed to hear. Honesty should go hand in hand with positive psychology and the good coaches understand how to do this well.

Devemos entender a realidade do coache e fazer ajustas.

1. Some may misunderstand positive psychology as focusing solely on happiness or positivity, neglecting the complexities of human emotions and challenges. 2. Overemphasis on positivity can lead to overlooking real challenges, whereas a balanced approach fosters resilience and adaptive problem-solving.
-
Investing in training and acquiring additional skills equips coaches to navigate complexities ethically and effectively, maintaining the integrity of the coaching process.

1. Apply knowledge flexibly, adapting interventions to suit the evolving needs of leaders and their contexts. 2. Incorporate positive psychology seamlessly into the broader coaching framework, ensuring it complements other models and techniques used in leadership development. 3. Use tools and assessments to measure the impact of positive psychology interventions on well-being, engagement, and performance.

A combination of coaching and mentorship will help individuals improve. Coaching is sharing knowledge, skills, and theories to help individuals discover the best path for them. Mentorship is sharing personal stories to help individuals connect with the coach to build a positive relationship.

A best practice for positive psychology in coaching is to focus on first order changes. I use the vernacular of "Be-Do-Have". First order changes refer to changes at the level of "Be"... Take two coaching models: State-Story-Strategy and Observer-Action-Result. What these have in common is they illustrate a common best practice. We tend to work on the level of behaviors/actions to change results. But there is a first order level: the client's body, emotions, and thoughts -- their being. This determines their perceptions which determine the actions they take and the results they get. It's Be-Do-Have. The best coaching should include first order work around self-perception, thought patterns, emotional states, and the use of the body.

Positive psychology in coaching greatly supports the development of a growth-oriented mindset in clients. This mindset emphasizes the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Coaches using positive psychology can encourage clients to view challenges as opportunities for growth, fostering resilience. Emphasizing effort and persistence over innate talent can lead to increased motivation and persistence in the face of obstacles, greatly contributing to the client's personal and professional development. This approach aligns well with the principles of positive psychology, creating a comprehensive coaching experience.

Coaching is fundamentally growth-focused, rather than deficit-focused. Positive psychology is based on enabling us to thrive by recognizing and developing strengths, a more optimistic mindset and greater self-awareness. Coaches can use positive psychology not just to shift clients to a strengths- and values-based approach, but also to emphasize possibility, growth and motivation through the clients' own experience. Importantly, positive psychology supports coaches' own development, in setting the tone and environment for effective coaching sessions, and in reflective practice for continued improvement.
