In my experience, always keep the stakeholder updated about the status of the project, even about the loop holes and blocks. Always try to see things from their perspective and expect the worst. Have pseudo deadlines prior to the exact deadlines but make them realistic.

Assuming you have a slippery stakeholder. 1:1s and other subjective discussions will not allow you to really pin down their expectations. The worst ones will change their mind without even acknowledging they might have said something completely opposite a week ago. Instead, capture their expectations in objective terms from the get-go. For example, ask them upfront if the project is scope-based or time-based and document that in a visible location. Display that decision on the front page of your dashboard so it’s there every time during reviews. Do the same for other key goals and metrics that you should define with the stakeholder upfront. The more you leave to subjective opinion the harder it will be to keep the project on track.

A well thought of explanation based on impact his behaviour is causing on the project progress and how professionally & patiently you have been dealing with him so far iaw RACI needs to be emphasized. PS- The question itself is lopsided towards the stakeholder. PM is accountable for project success in an professional manner and in that only should lie happiness of stakeholders.

Active listening is paramount! Letting them vent out and empathising builds in trust.Exceeding expectations only to compromise service quality later can erode trust. Maintaining open lines of communication is invariably advantageous. Negotiation is mutually beneficial. Agreeing on a Win-Win makes a lot of difference. Document all verbal agreements to prevent misinterpretations later. Strategic escalation, when needed can bring in positive outcomes!
