I believe open communication is essential to building trust. They say that about marriages too. My Myers Briggs personality type is "extreme extrovert". I tend to work on the basis of open, explicit communication. I have enough experience from my past, with the runs from those past successes on the board, including on the basis of my outstanding ethics, that I have confidence in myself. I can see how my confidence might frighten bosses who lack confidence in their own experience and ethical standards. If there are gaps in experience and standards that my boss is worrying about, he or she should discuss them with me and we can agree on the target - our shared goals. And so long as we stay on target, I will put history down to experience.

This goes to my earlier point about open communication, experience, standards and agreed shared goals. Back in the day, in complex organisations with lots of office politics and sacred cows, I advised my clients "be careful with what you wish for", because I tried my best to be reliable in an absolute sense, and have a track record of successful delivery. Whilst I try to be sensitive and whilst I would show emotional intelligence, at the end of the day, I also had no problem with slaughtering all their sacred cows in front of them, if that's what it took to be reliable and get the job done. One of my favourite approaches is to get two leaders who lead silos in an organisation to only be allowed to argue the opposite side's point of view.

The most important alliances are with the sponsors at the top. It is essential to agree with them shared goals, because it's not possible to slaughter sacred cows without building alliances with the core sponsors at the top. In addition, it's essential to know where the real power is vested because it might not be the person with the nominal title "leader". At ABN AMRO Bank, I discovered that the real power over its transaction banking system was with a woman who is very honest, who had what's known as the "god-rights" to the provisioning system for all the other rights in the system. Once she was clear in her mind with my professionalism and commitment to rigorous process, we formed an alliance and were able to get major things done.
