Leading by example is number one in my book. As a retired Border Patrol Agent, I am proud that the U.S. Border Patrol's motto is Honor First. However, with such an outstanding motto, leadership needs to do their best to live up to that high standard. It was very disappointing to the troops to see leaders who did not live out our motto. When leaders lead by example and set the high bar of Honor First, they inspire others to follow their good example. Unfortunately the converse is also true, in that, if they lead by a poor example they lower the bar through their poor example. I am so thankful to those who did lead by good example, they inspired Honor First in many others.
