From Middle High German zëmen, Old High German zëman. Cognate with Old Saxon tëman (archaic English teem), Dutch betamen (to be proper, suit), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (gatiman).[1]
