velocitization
Appearance
English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From velocitize -ation.
Noun
[edit]velocitization (countable and uncountable, plural velocitizations)
- The condition of being accustomed to high speeds, so that they no longer seem as fast.
- 1953, Mississippi Highways - Volumes 22-23, page 9:
- Velocitization refers simply to deceptive speeds possible on a modern expressway.
- 1985, Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Road Worthy, →ISBN, page 103:
- Velocitization is a special danger when leaving a freeway. You may misjudge your speed on the exit ramp and come suddenly upon traffic stopped at a junction point connecting a lower speed roadway.
- 1996, Heward Grafftey, Safety Sense: How to Live Safely and Prevent Death and Injury, →ISBN:
- To prevent velocitization, the feeling of going slower than you really are, keep checking the speedometer while you drive.
- (microbiology) The process of subjecting a sample to extreme speeds
- 1996, David M. Hillis, Craig Moritz, Barbara K. Mable, Molecular Systematics, page 283:
- A single gradient (part B) usually will suffice, although to obtain maximum purity (e.g., for use as a probe), a velocitization step (part D) and a second CsCl-PI gradient (part E) are added. The velocitization differs from equilibrium gradients in that molecules are pelleted at a rate proportional to their size and largeley independent of conformation.
- 1998, A. Rus Hoelzel, Molecular Genetic Analysis of Populations: A Practical Approach, →ISBN:
- For most enzymatic manipulations, including restriction endonuclease digestion, end-labelling, nick translation, or primer extension labelling (random priming), it is usually not necessary to perform the velocitization and final gradient steps.
- 2005, Molecular Evolution, Producing the Biochemical Data, →ISBN:
- A velocitization is sometimes used between two density-gradient ultracentrifugations to [19] mitochondrial genomics 317.
