Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *au̯aϑā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes- (to dwell, abide, pass/stay the night). Cognate to Sanskrit वास (vāsá-, sojourn, stay, spending the night), प्रौष्ठ (próṣṭha-, lodging).[1] Alternatively from an unattested *vartë, from Proto-Albanian *wartā, close to Tocharian B wärto (garten), Irish fert (grave mound), Old English weorð (yard).[2] According to Krzysztof Tomasz Witczak, it might be the source of Doric Greek ἀάνθα (aántha)[3]

Noun

[edit]

vathë m (plural vathe, definite vathi, definite plural vathet)

  1. (sheep) fold, pen, cote (fenced area, in which the small cattle is herded together for the night)
