From Proto-Finnic *turbëh, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *turbz, whence also English turf. Finnic cognates include Estonian turvas, Ingrian turve, Karelian turveh, Livonian dūrbal, Livvi turveh, Ludian turbiž, turbeh, Veps turbiž, turbaz, turbez, Võro turbas and Votic turvaz (Kattila).
